Debenhams Company dates back to 1778, when William Clark opened a drapers shop at 44 Wigmore Street in London’s West End, offering costly clothes, bonnets, gloves, and parasols. William Debenham invested in the company that would later become Clark & Debenham in 1813. The first shop outside of London, an exact version of the Wigmore Street store, opened in Cheltenham in 1818. In the years that followed, the Debenhams Brand benefited from the Victorian trend for family grieving, in which widows and other female members followed a stringent code of dress and etiquette.
Debenham & Freebody was renamed after Clement Freebody’s investment in the company in 1851. In addition to its retail outlets, the company formed a wholesale division that sold fabric and other products to dressmakers and other major retailers. Throughout the rest of the nineteenth century, many grocery, wholesale, and industrial industries were acquired. The company merged with Marshall & Snellgrove in 1919 and acquired Knightsbridge merchant Harvey Nichols in 1920. Seven years later, the Debenham family’s interest ceased, and the firm became a public company for the first time in 1928.
William Clark founded the company in 1778 as a drapers’ shop at 44 Wigmore Street in London. Formalized paraphrase In 1813, William Debenham joined the firm, and the name was shortened to Clark & Debenham. Cavendish House was later renamed and sold drapery, silks, haberdashery, millinery, hosiery, lace, and family mourning products. As the company expanded, the partners decided to extend it by opening branches in Cheltenham and Harrogate.
After the firm went into bankruptcy in March 2009, the company bought the Principles brand and stock. Principles run concessions in 121 Debenhams stores before being relaunched as part of the Designers at Debenhams collection by Ben de Lisi. Debenhams paid £12.3 million for the Danish department store chain, Magasin Du Nord, in November 2009. Under the Magasin name, the company runs six stores in Denmark. Debenhams acquired the 115 Faith concessions operating within its stores in July 2010 after Faith went into administration.
