Asus was founded in Taipei in 1989 by T.H. Tung, M.T. Liao, and Ted Hsu as a small manufacturer of motherboards for PCs. In May 1998, Asus launched the first AMD-based motherboard, the A7M, which was a great success. In January 2000, Asus introduced two new motherboard form factors to the market: the ATX and the BTX.
In November 2005, Asus was spun off from Pegatron Corp. In 2006, Asus entered the LCD TV market with the LC20 series.
In September 2008, Asus launched the Eee PC at COMPUTEX Taipei. The product was initially marketed as a low-cost ultra-portable notebook for emerging markets such as Brazil and Russia. However, it quickly became popular in developed markets such as Europe and the United States due to its low price and features such as Wi-Fi connectivity and a webcam.
In January 2009, Asus began shipping the Eee PC 1008HA Seashell series of notebooks. In October 2009, Asus released several new laptops including the N10Jc-A1 netbook which featured a built-in webcam and ran Windows 7 Beta.
In March 2010, Asus launched the Padfone, a smartphone with a detachable tablet dock. The device was first announced at COMPUTEX Taipei in June 2011 and was released in April 2012.
In January 2011, Asus released the Chromebook C200 which ran Google's Chrome OS operating system. The Chromebook C200 was followed by the Chromebook C201 in May 2012.
