Performance was a short-lived brand of video game consoles from the late 1990s. The brand was started by Sega and was only used for their last two consoles, the Sega Saturn and the Sega Dreamcast. The idea behind Performance was to create a more budget-friendly alternative to Sega's main line of consoles. The Performance brand was only used for a few years before being discontinued. The Sega Saturn was the first console to be released under the Performance brand. It was released in North America in 1995 and was discontinued in 1998. The Saturn was not as successful as Sega had hoped and only sold around 9 million units worldwide. The console was plagued by hardware problems and a lack of strong third-party support. The Sega Dreamcast was the second and final console to be released under the Performance brand. It was released in 1999 and was discontinued in 2001. The Dreamcast was more successful than the Saturn, selling around 10 million units worldwide. The console was well-received by critics and had a strong lineup of first-party and third-party games. However, it was ultimately unsuccessful against the Sony PlayStation 2 and was Sega's last home console.
