The races are lengthy, and I've found that the Chamois Butt'r holds up well for a few hours. I apply it along the seam-line of my shorts, underwear, and have even put in on my shoulders because I was hauling a pack. In general, and more to your question, the skin to skin places are where it does the best. I'd be well worth your money to try it. They make some on-the-go little packs of probably less than an ounce that I've seen in bike shops, which is what I'd recommend if you were really hesitant about going all in with a larger bottle. **Q: If they area is already chaffed, is it a good idea to put some on the affected area?** A: I've never had any problem doing that. On 2+ week self-supported bicycle tours, where rubbing/rashes are sometimes unavoidable, I clean the entire crotch area with baby wipes, then applied the Chamois Butt'r with CLEAN HANDS. It works great. I wouldn't try it if there were open sores or deep abrasions--at that point I'd be talking to my doctor.
