Review: Works Great! - If you're looking for an exact replica of the harmful chemical dyes you can buy anywhere, you won't find it here. However, if you're looking for a great alternative with a few flaws, this is it!! These are not bright, primary colors, they are closer to jewel tone but they aren't pale. They're more gel, not liquid. They mix well as long as you use them in the first year, I'd say. I found some that got lost in the back of my cabinet and used it knowing it was closing in on two years. It was a bit harder to mix and get the color evenly distributed but I left icing in my kitchen aid and walked away for a few minutes and it was fine after a few scrapes of the side and another round. I did try baking with it and I felt like it tasted like veggie chips (it was a dyed cake)! My dad gladly gobbled up the whole cake but I will not bake it again. Several of my kids react to dyes, from hives to migraines and for years, there weren't "fun" alternatives for them. This allows me to make some of that stuff for them, without worries.

The colors were vivid, and I noticed little change to the flavor (In other naturally-colored products we've tried, we can often taste whatever was used to make the color.). Do not expect a bright blue; the blue came out more of a grey-lavender shade, and there was a hint of flavor to the blue, though not unpleasant. I personally liked the color, but it wasn't very blue. I found that both the Red and Yellow were bright and flavor-less. India Tree is the only natural decorating color I have been able to find, so I can't really compare it to any other brands, but I'm very happy that it's available so we have the option of food color without artificial colors.

**Q: i want to use these to color water for water play games for my toddler. do the colors dissolve in water and show up? what is the verdict on skin stain**
A: I still had some red left and decided to try this out for you. I used 5 drops to a full glass of water and it dissolved very well. The color looked obvious that it was red, which was a nice surprise seeing as how it's useless in cake icing. I stirred it around for a minute or two and didn't stain my fingers, also dripping clear in color. So I would say it would be a good investment for water play.

**Q: Hi, I wanted to DIY edible paint for my daughter to play with. Would like to know if the color can be easily washed off with water after play?**
A: Hi there! We make fingerpaints with these colors and plain yogurt with great results. We mix them in an icetray and I noticed the yellow sticks around a bit, but havent noticed any stains other than the yellow on the icetray. Hope that helps.

**Q: Can I use this to color my handmade soap?**
A: I haven't tried it for that but it did leave some slight staining on my counter when I made frosting so I'm not sure that's the best use.

**Q: Are they gluten free?**
A: It doesn't say so on the package but I have a gluten intolerance and I had no problem after tasting the frosting with the colors. There are about 3 ingredients in each color - glycerin, water and the colorant which is vegetable based so I was ok with that. If you have a severe gluten allergy (not an intolerance like I have), I would contact the manufacturer to be 100% sure that their equipment is not contaminated with traces. Otherwise, you shouldn't have a problem. I hope this helps :)

These are great for coloring frostings or using in recipes that require dyes. They are all natural so of course the colors are not as bright as typical food colorings; however, knowing that they are all natural and made from nature makes the subtle colors worth it. Eating healthier means discovering new ways to make food taste and look good. I'm fine with the colors but know that you will not achieve the bright colors you might be used to. Still great product! Will definitely continue to buy!
