I put my nose into the brush and smelled a bit of a bad smell but nothing major and nothing that would stop me from buying it again. Some baby powder would probably fix the smell. It is more like a barbers brush to get the hair off of a persons neck. Did not send it back because the shipping price was not worth the trouble. The bristles are soft, but since I have not used it, can't say if they shed.
