Does require a little effort to get the water out, but that probably helps keep it more leak proof. Water does condense on the outside on really hot days. They fell in love as soon as they saw these. Both quickly figured out the spout even though their other bottles have straws. I've had to do a bit of reminding them to close the spout to prevent leaks, but since we only drink water from them it's really no big deal to me if we have a few small leaks, and we've had very few.
