Worked well on wood with staples, failed when encountering a screw

*by W***C on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on July 22, 2022*

I build some curved stairs. The side rails are laminated layers of 1/4" plywood. To hold the layers together while the glue dried, I used narrow crown staples in a pneumatic stapler. The first layers were also screwed to the underlying structure.I wanted to drill 1/2" holes through the laminations and underlying 2x4s to install carriage bolts for extra support. I was concerned that staples randomly place in the various layers and screws in the bottom ones would damage a regular drill bit, so I bought this one.The bit bullied its way through the wood OK and I could hear staples being cut once in a while. I was trying to avoid hitting screws but hoped it would survive such an encounter.I did hit one screw and it sheared the "ears" off the tip of the bit. This was disappointing but, given the design of the bit I wasn't very surprised. I managed to drill more holes which were understandably smaller, but I was able to hammer in the 1/2" carriage bolts anyway.I deducted one star, not because it broke when hitting a screw, but because it does quite a rough job on the wood. I may have been better off buying more cheaper 1/2" standard bits and replacing as they dulled. Nevertheless, I did buy a replacement to drill on the other side of the stairs and to keep in my toolbox for appropriate jobs.

The Round case is a P.I.A., but can be modified to work...

*by G***D on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on April 5, 2022*

Haven't used the Drill bits yet, but I spent 15 minutes modifying the case to suit my needs. If you work in the trades, you've probably encountered things that seemed like a good idea on the drawing board but needed some "field adjustment" to actually work. This case is one of those "good ideas"... Clip off the red post and unscrew the base from the cover. Use a small screwdriver to pop the clips at the top of the case. use the same screwdriver to work the bits loose from the retaining plastic tabs. Use some flush cutting nippers to remove the plastic retaining clips and the center ring for the 1/2" bit. dispose of the scraps of plastic and snap the case back together. Problem solved.
