Review: LOVE IT ! - As usual I was looking to replace a Sony 5 disk changer, bought in the mid 90s at the peak of cd tech. Now the selection is slim anywhere you look. I bought the Yamaha because I trust the brand. Things I like The cd sound is bad ass! I cant say enough about it. It does everything the old cd player did. shuffles the cd and the song with every new selection. You can change out cds while its playing. Easy install, a power cord and two wires, left and right, to plug into the amp. BEST OF ALL is that this unit is designed to work hand in hand with I Pod tech. When I read about this in the owners manual I was very curious. I have a older ipod that has problems. the battery runs out quickly and the >> no longer works on the wheel. Its a 16 GB with 1700 songs. So the advance button was the first to go. This is no longer a problem. The Yamaha has a USB port in the front. You plug in your ipod select USB, the ipod turns itself on and the Yamaha hand remote will control all the basic commands. You still have to program the ipod if you want to listen to a specific artist or album and select shuffle if you want songs played randomly. The battery is no longer a problem because when USB is selected and the ipod is plugged in its being charged. I just leave my little ipod with all its songs, plugged in, and laying on the Yamaha. This unit just brought back to life a great little piece of technology. So now, for me, its twice the value! Things I don't like. Like with all fading tech, lack of interest drives, or rather, no longer drives the market. so the digital display in the front of the unit is very very small, unlike my Sony. The remote is not great but its ok. Ill leave with just a couple thoughts, because this type of tech has run its coarse it has the potential to possess the very best of all the cd developments that occurred during that time. I think that's why it sounds so good Adding the digital option is a really nice touch but it was inevitable. I will say that cds sound better than the ipod but that could just be me.
Review: Excellent CD player, with minor quibbles - I received the Yamaha C600BL CD player very quickly after the order was placed. It arrived undamaged, was easy to set up, intuitive to operate, and the improvement in sound quality compared to my old Sony CD deck was striking from the first disc I played. My wonderful old Fried Studio Four speakers have never sounded better than with this player. For the price, it is an excellent value. Having used it for only a couple of weeks, there is no way to assess the reliability, but there have certainly been no hints of any problems to come. It is easy to hear the unit changing discs, but it is no noisier than other players in its class and is not distracting. When switching between tracks on a disc, the delay seems a little long - three seconds or so - but is not really a problem. One feature is to be able to dim or turn off the display, and that should, in principle, reduce the background noise. However, I am unable to detect any difference at all - a good thing as it means there is no real disadvantage of leaving it on. The only feature I wish the unit had is a headphone jack to allow more direct access to the sound than one obtains by plugging into the main power amp. However, the sound quality is so good that the need for headphones is greatly reduced, so I don't think I'll miss using them much. My only significant criticism is reserved for the remote. First, it is rather bland and symmetrical, the buttons all have the same shape, and the button labels are all very small. Thus, you really have to look closely to find the one you want to push. This will improve with time, of course, as one becomes more familiar with the layout of the remote, but it would have been easy to design it with a better human interface. The other problem with the remote is that there is no way to select an arbitrary one of the five discs. Instead, the only function it provides is "disc skip" that allows skipping only from one to the next. If the disc I want is not in the next position, I find myself just having to get up and select it by pushing the appropriate button on the cd player itself. Overall, the remote is OK but is definitely the weakest link in the design. Overall, I recommend this unit, at least so far.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Here's a question that no one asks, on a usb stick, does it play unlimited folders or how many does it read thank you**
A: I can't test an unlimited number of folders because I'm not Superman, but I placed 45 folders on my USB stick, with each folder containing at least one song file. In the last folder I placed a set of folders that were nested 10-deep, with each nested level containing one song file. The CD changer detected and played all of the folders. The player numbers the folders from 1 to whatever you have (in my case, 45).When playing songs from USB, you select the desired folder by using the FOLDER UP and FOLDER DOWN buttons on the remote; there doesn't seem to be a way to select folders from the player's front panel. The user manual says, "Filename is displayed in the front panel display and playback starts automatically in order by date and time of creation if playable files are in the USB device." Reading that sentence makes me feel kind of tired, but I think I get what they're saying. :-)

**Q: I have a great sound system I just want something for movies. How is the video?**
A: this is a cd player. does not play DVD's

**Q: Does unit show time remaining on disc, also time remaining of track playing, and are these functions controlled by a button on the remote?**
A: When the disc starts playing the amount of play time for the track is displayed. In order to see the remaining play time for the track press the display button on the remote once. Another press of the display button will show the amount of play time remaining for the disc.

**Q: Does this unit have "last memory?" By that I mean after you turn the unit off and turn it on again, it will remember which disc was being played.**
A: Yes and no. The unit will remember the last disc that was played, and start playback at the beginning of that disc. However, it "forgets" that it has played previous CDs. In other words, if you place CDs in the tray as 1, 2, and 3, and turn off the machine during disc 3, the unit will play disc 3 from the beginning, but then go back and play disc 1 and 2 again.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Every Bit Much, Much Better Than Good Enough
*by P***Z on June 22, 2010*

The only reasons I wanted and bought the Yamaha CD-C600BL 5-Disc CD Changer was for its 24-bit digital/analog conversion rate and the 5-disc capacity. I never had better than 16-bit D/A cd or dvd players; I read reviews here that convinced me to get a 24-bit D/A player. I have two new Denon AV receivers and older NAD stereo equipment, plus high-quality loudspeakers; so I was eligible to notice very superior sound. I can't compare the Yamaha CD-C600BL 5-Disc CD Changer to any other 24-bit cd player because I haven't listened to others with my systems. The package includes a stereo RCA phono cable, a remote w/batteries, and a bare-bones user manual that covers everything in direct and simple language. The connections include one left/right RCA phono plug output, one optical (Toslink) digital output, and a RS-232C terminal. However, the optical cable isn't included with the package (nor is a serial cable for the RS-232C connection). I've connected the player via the ('analog') RCA cables and also using the optical Toslink cable. I notice no audible difference between the connections. Why should there be any difference, anyhow? The digital information on the cd has been converted to analog by the player so that the preamplifier and amplifier can process it, and then send it in analog form to the 'analog' speakers. If the cd's digital signal is destined to be input to another digital processor or device, the optical digital cable would be the best way to make that connection (well, there's also a RS-232C terminal, but it's not as pure as the optical handshake). In essence, connecting with the RCA plugs makes a perfect connection, just as perfect as the 'digital' optical cable makes. The sound is obviously superior to 16-bit D/A players. Some meaningful sounds that weren't audible are now audible; previously audible sounds no longer have any masking. There must be one of those laws that applies here, but I don't know of it: For each improvement in quality - more watts in a high-end amplifier, minimal harmonic distortion, full frequency response, precise loudspeakers, 24-bit digital-to-analog conversion rate - you can listen to the full sound at a lower volume. It saves your hearing in the long run. Sure, the changer makes its mechanical noise when it rotates each disc into the laser reader. Vinyl record changers made more noise than that when the needle reached the label and jerked off the record (haha), when the tone arm swung out of the way and the next record plopped down - hey, if you couldn't hear anything mechanical, your heart would be in your throat hoping nothing is broken. As I write this, the Yamaha cd changer is only some two feet from my ears, and I happen to like the sound of its carousel. Be careful, though, when the tray is open as you're adding or removing discs - the tray could close from your inadvertent pressure; it spins and closes fast; you could break a valuable fingernail on a guitar-playing finger. Being an old hand with home audio gear, I can't say if there's anything difficult about the Yamaha's set-up and use. I'd say it's designed and made to be as plug-and-play as possible. For anyone who has passed the Audio 101 course, the Yamaha CD-C600BL 5-Disc CD Changer is super-intuitive. You know, buttons with arrows this way, arrows that way, and so on (or off). The product's name speaks for itself: Yamaha Natural Sound Compact Disc Changer.
