Great beginning, but the 2nd act was resolved too quickly

*by C***R on Reviewed in the United States on February 15, 2013*

Overall I really enjoyed this book. The first 80% was very well done, and believable. I found Danny's character wonderful. Although he's quite flamboyant, I never felt that he could have been a women. His androgeny at times is so well described, while other times he acts like such a guy and I found that duality wonderful. He's the type of character i enjoy reading about, a guy with a strong character who's pretty secure in who his is. I also liked Lance's character, but i didn't feel like I got to know him as much as I wanted. The story is told from Danny's 1st POV, and while I enjoy this, in this instance, due to the brevity of the 2nd act (more on this in a bit), I didn't learn nearly as much about him as I would have liked.Another huge plus for this book is the path taken to fall in love. These guys take a while to develop their feelings, although they are drawn to each other quickly. You can see a friendship developing that ultimately leads to love. I thought the author did a fantastic job showing (instead of just telling) the reader. In fact, that journey is 80% of the book, so far so good. The problem arises when we jump in time. I was glad that everything doesn't just get resolved in college, as this doesn't always happen and the time jump makes sense. What doesn't is how quickly everything becomes resolved in the end. This author is very talented and I didn't understand the brevity of the 2nd act. I felt it should have been longer. While the ending was satisfying the journey there was not as much as it could have been. 80% of the novel covers a 6 or so month time span, then we jump a number of years with minimal info on what happens, then everything gets tied up really quickly. I dont' want to give it away, as I think there are ALOT of positive aspects to this novel to recommend. I just felt like I'd sat through an awesome first act of play, which takes an hour or so, both characters are sympathetic, you love them, root for them, then the second act takes 5 minutes, the lights come on and you wonder if it's really finished? It takes away from what could have been a great novel.an update, as I wrote the review just after reading the book, a day later and I find myself still thinking about Danny's character. I thoroughly loved him. I don't think I've loved a character this much since Jory Harcourt from Mary Calmes Matter of Time series. Although not the same, both characters have a mix of strength, vulnerability, and confidence to themselves that I find really fun to read about. So a very solid 4 stars, but still feel like I wanted to know more about Lance, what happened with him, and their journey to the short epilogue at the end.

Great romance, with a little nitpicking

*by M***Y on Reviewed in the United States on December 25, 2019*

Overall, this was a great story. It is told from Danny's point of view. Danny is an out and proud gay college student who has unleashed his feminine side. Lance is a straight football jock who finds Danny fascinating. Each is very committed to their dreams, and that's where the inevitable conflict resides. Danny wants to be a star on Broadway, and Lance wants to join the NFL (the NFL naturally is not very friendly towards gay players). Neither of them has a "plan B".I really loved Danny's character. I loved how he embraced his feminine side without compromising on his male identity. Being the more experienced lover, Danny knows that their career paths will not cross, and that Lance is not strong enough to overcome society's disapproval of the gay lifestyle. I wish that the author had told part of this story from Lance's point of view. Because he is a stereotypical strong, silent type, it's hard to know his thoughts based on just his actions. And, especially in the beginning, when Lance reacts poorly towards Danny, what is going through Lance's mind? (Although we are given a partial explanation later). Neither one of them has a great epiphany about a solution that works for both of them, which to me seemed very real. But not to worry, there is a HEA finally at the end.

    Appropriate Read Around Valentine's Day

*by A***R on Reviewed in the United States on February 16, 2013*

I couldn't think of a more appropriate read around Valentine's Day. This book really tugged at the heart strings and the romance was so sweet and endearing. The book is told from the perspective of Danny, the main character. He's the rare college kid who knows exactly who he is and doesn't apologize to anyone if they don't like it. He's studying theatre, is flamboyant, and gay. He only has people in his life he loves and respects. He grew up in a supportive family with loving parents and knows how lucky he's been.Danny rooms with his best friend, Bo, who he's known since they were thirteen. Bo's the polar opposite. He's nerdy, studies business, is shy, and straight. He is; however, funny as hell and they get along perfectly. It's when Danny agrees to go to a frat party with Bo so Bo can meet with a girl he has a crush on that Danny first meets a set of haunting grey eyes.Later that night Danny meets Katie the object of Bo's affection and finds out after a not-so-great first impression that those grey eyes belong to Katie's twin brother, Lance. Danny's always been a go-lucky type of guy, but for some reason he can't shake the experience or get those eyes out of his mind. He thought he might have caught a glimpse of interest in those eyes, but a football jock like Lance couldn't possibly be gay, could he?Lance has his sights set on an NFL career and has no Plan B. He can't get Danny out of his system and starts to seek him out. Danny can't seem to figure Lance out or his motives. Danny convinces himself that Lance just must be curious and is willing to help since he's up for no strings attached, but soon realizes that feelings are growing stronger. With no Plan B, Danny knows whatever this relationship is can't last.Whatever happens you want to stick around for the outcome. I loved these characters. Danny's feistiness and Lance's insecurities just pluck at your heart. You can't help but root for them. The read was so worth it and I won't be forgetting these guys anytime soon.
