Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns Review: Still a good read despite other reviews - I was so excited when I found out a sequel for "The Devil Wears Prada" was coming in. I never thought that I would be such a fan and grow so close to the characters in these books, but I did thanks to 'Weisberger's writing style. I read review upon review stating that this follow-up book was horrible. I was very hesitant to "waste my time" as others had said. I absolutely loved getting to rekindle with these characters. I think that the main problem that everyone has with the book is that the title is slightly misleading. If you really think about it, maybe it's not necessarily about Andy get revenge on Miranda Priestly. Miranda Priestly was always the one that wore the Prada, and a tiger can't change its stripes. Miranda was back and was there to hope everyone would still continue to mock her miserable lifestyle. This book has many (not completely unexpected) twists and heart retching turns. I think that this book helps show that Andy was able to eventually do what was best for her, which in the long run put her life back on track and with the people she loved the most. I will be re-reading this again and again! Thanks Lauren, for another great distraction from our every day life! Review: Not on par with Devil, but still entertaining - I loved The Devil Wears Prada, so I was disappointed to read that its sequel had gotten such mixed reviews. The mixed reviews obviously didn't stop me from reading the book, but I did go in with fairly low expectations. Imagine my surprise when I stayed up late reading the entire first quarter of the book the night I started it! I had read a serious book right before reading this, so I found Revenge refreshingly light and entertaining. It was an easy read following the serious book, which was exactly what I needed! Initially, a lot of Revenge is Andy rehashing memories of her time with Miranda and these snarky descriptions are what made the original Devil so good. This time around, the Miranda memories do feel a bit warmed over, but are probably necessary to set the stage. In Revenge, Andy and Emily end up on the receiving end of the charming version of Miranda (the version most celebrities saw in Devil). It was really interesting to see the juxtaposition of how she treats people she wants something from versus how she treats her underlings. You can feel her transform between personalities right before your eyes and then back again in seconds. I also enjoyed the secondary storyline of Andy's marriage to Max Harrison, the son of a Media scion, and found her stuck-up snob of a mother-in-law to be somewhat amusing character. Even though she was dislikable, she added some humorous ridiculousness to the story. Despite enjoying the book and flying through it, I hated the ending, and that seems to be the consensus among other reviewers. It couldn't have been more cliche and you could see it coming a mile away. Actually, there were a lot of cliche moments in this book and I rolled my eyes at some parts. But, I have to go on overall feeling while reading a book and I enjoyed this one for what it was...something light, easy, and not thought provoking. Sometimes you just need a book like that. Yes, Andy WOULD have her own magazine, (but it does NOT at all seem plausible to me that Emily would be her business partner), nor does Max seem AT ALL the type of man she would EVER marry. Her character is WAY too smart & savvy for that. Strange things in life DO happen of course, but it just seems EXTREMELY exaggerated for the novel's sake. Honestly, I guess I would have expected to find Andy's life to be more like Jules Ostin's in The Intern (her own magazine instead of an Internet start-up, cool Brooklyn digs and a laid-back Alex-esque hubby at home with the kiddy), and MAYBE that's what ends up happening when she reunites with Alex. I also enjoyed the whole Miranda trying to buy out her magazine through Elias/Clarke bit, BUT, it might have even been more interesting IF Andrea and Miranda had been dealing with each other DIRECTLY as corporate rivals, WITHOUT Emily even being involved. Loved it whenever Miranda did surface, because those instances WERE the best thing about the novel in general. I felt Emily's prescence was unnecessary, and that Andy would be quite strong enough to find someone else to be her business partner other than her. I can find Emily and Andy rekindling their friendship palatable, and maybe even Emily working with Andy at the magazine (as someone's assistant! 😉), just not co-owning the business with her. It just didn't seem realistic, given their past track record as co-workers working under Miranda. In all, a fun read, but not as good as Devil, and certainly NOT where I thought Andy's life would be.
