You can bend the two ends to insert it into the hole and then it holds in place by friction. **Q: Once in place, can the cover be easily removed to allow access in the future?** A: Yes, It is very easily removed. **Q: Is this my best option for covering a hole from a smoke detector?** A: This could be an option for you. We used it to cover a larger hole in our ceiling in the finished part of our basement.
