Especially if your new to sharpening stones I recommend spending a little more on a kit like this that has a variation in grits. I'm practicing on old kitchen knives that don't have covers anymore and have dulled out. This kit comes with a guide which will help with most of the knife but you'll still need to free hand the tip becuase it's curved. The reason I prefer this kit as opposed to the single stone of 1000/6000 is becuase my knives are dull and using a lower grit like 400 or lower if you can find it can help Apex the knife quicker. I spent some time defining the Apex and then I passed the blade on each side about 20 times and then 30 on the 8000 grit. I am still very new to this with only a few months of practice but you can see and feel the difference after youve spent the time to go through each grit. Review: Basic stone sharpening - Wooden base has molded and shows water damage, even thou I dried all pieces before storage.
