How far does it go out before the right hand turn, and then how far forward?** A: As far as width, the slide's opening is wide enough for a kid (19.5 inches). Total length of the slide is around 116 inches & it takes up 5 sq.ft. of space total. The "rails" are inadequate for stopping most kids, so any drop or uneven installation of the outer support can be DISASTROUS. My kids fell off this thing before I adjusted the rail support height. (I do NOT recommend using this on a pool.) The turn juts out another foot or so, and the majority of the slide below-turn is about 56". This means a total clearance of around 4 feet at the outside of the turn. One note: The slope at 4.5 feet is okay, the slope at 5' is considerable, and the slope at 5.5 (the advertised-by-Amazon maximum) is STEEP. The manufacturer's instructions state that the max height should be 5', so I don't advise the 5.5 height.The turn is pretty abrupt. Basically, the average-size 6-year-old (check the picture- it's pretty accurate) slides about a body length (3 1/2 - 4ft) before they hit the turn, and there isn't a lot of banking slope. The turn is ABRUPT. You'll need to make sure the outside edge of the slide is solidly braced and supported, as that's where ALL the weight goes once a kid slides down it. I used 4x4s attached to the 2x4s that fit in the slide slots for extra bracing. Even then, the slide tended to bow outward, so you may want to build in a slight (only SLIGHT!) anti-curve slant. Hardest part of building this slide is getting the supports even- not because you can't cut even wood, but because the slots in the slide where the wood goes are not always even inside the slide. To solve this: Push the 2x4 into the slide slots as far as it can go, then mark BOTH and cut. This means you'll have a much easier time cutting the supports to an even level, even if there's a malformed piece of plastic inside one slot or the other. It's a fast slide for little kids. Just remember the weight will pound the outer support post down pretty fast, so whatever you ground the post on should be SOLID. Other notes: Use 3-inch screws on the bottom, not the measly 1-inch ones they include- since you're depending on the screws to hold the slide, you may want to either use self-tapping screws (3-inch) or pre-drill, then use 3-inch screws on the supports as well.
