I do not know how to prevent this. This purchase replaces one that is about 5 years old. No separate power supply required, just plug it in. Small inline box contains transformer and diodes to convert AC to low voltage DC. Happy with this set. Comes with mounting clips, but I use cup hooks (box of 50 or 100 from Home Depot) which work very well.
