There’s no battery and no capacitor, as someone else claimed. As long as you wear the watch at least 10 hours a day then you should never have to hand wind it. Moving your arm throughout the day causes a rotor inside the watch to turn, which winds the watch and will not allow the watch to be overwound by the rotor. Once the main spring is fully wound, it provides anywhere from 40 to 120 hours of reserve spring power (depending on the brand/model), allowing you to place the watch on your nightstand while you sleep or even put it in a drawer over the weekend, and the watch will keep running until you put it back on again. If the watch is stationary for too long and all the energy from the main spring has run out, then put about 5 full turns on the crown, reset the date and time, put the watch on and you’re good to go. The self winding rotor will finish winding the watch for you and keep it wound indefinitely as long as you wear the watch at least 10 hours a day. **Q: How do I stop the second hand to set the exact second? Sincethis movementis supposed to have an power reserve of 41 hours when fully wound spring. Eighter you are not moving your arm much or the watch is defective. I used mine black model now for about 2 weeks and it never stopped. I wore it now not for about 19 hours and it still runs. Keep in mind that the rotor on the back only turns at an steep 90 degree angle. The self winding weight will not turn on an shallow angle - so it winds only confidently with some wrist up and down movement. Otherwise this is the best watch ever for me. This watch brings me back to my younger years when I received a similar Seiko 5 as a gift. That was my first automatic watch that I loved and cherished for many years. Some 16 years later, being able to afford nicer watches now, Seiko 5 watches still warm my heart in a special way. Even before my time, I remembered that my grandfather, then my father, all owned a Seiko 5 at one point in time. Therefore, I am very familiar with Seiko 5 line and how reliable they are. This particular watch does not deviate from the Seiko 5 heritage. Good value, great reliability, and good looking. Being a cheaper watch in my collection, this watch performance never ceased to surprise me. It runs at a constant accuracy of +1 sec a day! Unbelievable! It is small enough to not interfere with your arm movement, but large enough to make a wrist presence. Overall, very nice watch for the price paid. Hats off to Seiko for being able to pull a trick like this on a cheaper automatic watch. Most importantly, they have kept the price low for many years without any noticeable increase in price. As a Casio and G-Shock type of guy, I didn't think I'd like the nuances that a mechanical watch is known for. Yes, it does lose time, about 2-5 seconds a day depending on how you let it rest. On the wrist, I have yet to notice a serious drop in time, but I have not seen it lose any time. I've gotten compliments from coworkers and clients (those into watches too) and they all have been positive. My only issue is that the bracelet it comes on is not even on par with those that the retro Casio's come stock with. I switched mine out for an AliExpress Oyster style bracelet and my oh my did it make the watch pop even more.One of my childhood friends is a watchmaker apprentice and I had him look at it when I received it just to make sure shipping hadn't done anything to it. He was happy to report that it was fine and it was in solid working order after putting it on a demagnetizer and timegrapher.As a dress watch/weekend watch/ everyday watch/first mechanical watch, this is perfect.
