The first prototype videocassette recorders appeared in the 1960s, but it wasn't until the 1970s, when Sony Corporation developed the Betamax format and the Matsushita Corporation introduced the VHS format, that VCRs became affordable and relatively easy to operate. Although both Betamax and VHS formats use half-inch-wide magnetic tape, a cassette recorded on VHS cannot be played back on Betamax and vice versa. Thus, through the process of elimination, nearly all VCRs are VHS systems today. Modem VCRs have as many as seven heads that read and inscribe video and audio on the tape. A viewer has numerous options, like watching one television program while recording another, or programming the VCR weeks in advanceto automatically record upcoming programs. VCRs also allow for the easy production of home movies. Using a camcorder, which consists of a videocassette recorder connected to a video camera, even the most inexperienced photographer can shoot full-color pictures complete with audio. Today, most American homes are equipped with a VCR, whose most popular function is to allow entire families to gatherin front of the television to watch new and classic Hollywood movies inexpensively and in the comfort of their own living room.
