You simply hold it over the torch nozzle of a TIG or MIG torch and adjust the gas until you get the correct flow. I found the reading at the nozzle was about the same as on the tank gauge so obviously all was well and no leaks. Also tells me that I can mostly trust the tank gauge. Where I think it will be particularly useful is when using small disposable cylinders (as I often do when MIG welding) and with no tank gauge there is no real way of knowing if enough gas it getting through other than by listening to the hiss and deciding it sounds about right. I haven't tried the tool yet on my MIG but I'm sure it will make a big difference and I'll probably set it for less flow than when using the hiss test.
