In the hope of helping others (I see many similar complaints) here's what I did: On the inside of the device where the neck of the bottle fits, there is a black plate which can be pushed slightly away from the handle. When in the "pushed in" state, the corkscrew does not rotate when the handle is lifted. This is the key to the solution.
