The ability of Chappie to learn from his environment should have been the focus versus learning a hoodlum's code of ethics. Chappie's violence overshadowed his infantile, but advanced brain functions. He learned about advanced electronics, but nothing about morality. Chappie should have stood alone in the world of wonder, but he became too embroiled in the personal dramas of his creator and his captors, which distracted from the whole concept of artificial intelligence. The back story about the "Moose" was completely unneeded and offers mere gratuitous violence. Having a single company control an android enhanced police department is not a new concept. RoboCop nailed that one back in the 80's. Also, robots with authority to take human life is too far reaching since you cannot punish the robot for the needless pain and suffering of its victims. At most, detaining or incapacitating an assailant should have been the role of the droids. Non lethal is the only plausible or acceptable concept when it devolves to man vs. machine. The final flaw was the "God" like intelligence created on a home computer. That was too much to ignore. Compiling terabytes of code takes more than a few hours and at no point during this "binge" coding was there ever any testing of loops for what might be construed as a form of intelligence. Most of those scenes should have been edited out since they added nothing to the storyline. Segurney's role was well played, but her history of a tough sci-fi actress should have kept her stronger at the end. In all of her previous sci-fi movies, she never caves in to some dubious plot of her executive team. That was bothersome. In all, the movie was great entertainment worth watching again with slightly lowered expectations on the technical side.
