If this works, how did they know?

*by K***3 on Reviewed in the United States on May 26, 2013*

Please read my initial "one-star" review before the update: I had previously been to YouTube using my original browser, and had watched a variety of video clips dealing with topics of interest. After receiving Surf Easy, registering, and creating my password, I decided to revisit YouTube. When I did using the Surf Easy browser (all other browsers being closed on my computer), YouTube immediately offered me a sampling of the very videos I had previously watched using my old browser. (Subsequent attempts to use the SurfEasy browser allowed some sites to identify me by name.) If Surf Easy allows you to surf the web anonymously, how did YouTube know to offer me videos dealing with the very topics I had previously watched?????Update: On February 1, 2014 SurfEasy contacted registered users by email containing a link to a "recovery tool" designed to remedy unspecified problems with their USB browser. After contacting SurfEasy to make sure the mail was genuine, I downloaded the .exe file and installed the new software following their directions. For two days now I have been surfing various sites using Explorer AND the SurfEasy browser, and the previous problems seem to have been fixed entirely. Not one of the the sites visited by me using Explorer has identified my when revisited using the SurfEasy browser. One thing that might still happen is if you sign on to a site using the SurfEasy browser, then, without signing off, go to other sites before returning to the original site, there may still be a chance that they can identify you by name upon returning. This fix seems also to have had the effect of limiting those annoying advertisements immediately displayed by those who knew me when I logged on. The update can be found at [...]. So, I'm now satisfied that SurfEasy works as advertized. Thanks SurfEasy!!!!

Lousy product with even worse service

*by B***R on Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2012*

What a disappointment. First, I ordered the product on 7/4/12 and it took about 3 to 4 weeks to arrive. No big I thought, must be on backorder, probably a really popular product, cool. Started using it on my notebook computer at the office and on another desk top I frequently access. It worked okay for about a week. Than error messages started popping up. It insisted it couldn't find a network connection (the connection was fine). After another day it would just immediately crash as soon as the icon came up on the screen. Useless now.I called their customer service which while polite insisted they had never encountered such a problem. Well, first time for everything. They directed me to e-mail their tech support site. Fine, I did that. It took tech support almost 2 days to respond to my request for assistance. They said they would send me a link to a site that would allow me to download a repair tool. They did but the link didn't work. Sigh. I called customer service back, explained my growing disappointment in their product and service. No problem they said, they would send a new Surfeasy USB card to me and that I would be getting an e-mail that would allow me to transfer my account to this new card. And they had no idea why the link to the repair didn't work. So puzzling, they so helpfully informed me. They promised I would receive the new Surfeasy by Monday, 8/27. It is now the end of the day on Wednesday, 8/29. No card, no further word from Smarthome/Surfeasy, etc. Just sent their tech support a snarky e-mail. Who knows if I will hear back.

    SurfEasy Private Web Browser

*by J***L on Reviewed in the United States on October 21, 2013*

It almost works very well. I initially thought it would make a VPN tunnel that would protect ALL of my network connections. However, I found that only the Private Browser is going through the tunnel and is protected. If I run my Mac's Safari, Mail, FTP, etc. ... None of this is protected. I called their customer support and it took awhile to get them to confirm this and even then, they didn't give much detail or advice about how to use the device in the best way.It is very easy to set up and to use. I do believe everything going through the Private Browser/VPN tunnel is very well protected. I now know not to run Safari, Mail, FTP, etc. I'm just not sure how many other processes may be sending/receiving over the network that may not be protected and what, if anything, I should do about them.
