Mainly to keep cold/hot air in and to keep bugs out! It took a few days for my cats to get used to using it, become comfortable going in and out since this was the first cat door they've seen. Door features: The door has a little magnet at the bottom to keep the door from swinging. It was an easy installation process. Their were instructions on how to cut out the area your putting the cat door. It also came with the screws needed. The over all appearance is nice. I choose the black trim instead of white as a preference but it's nice you have options. It also has locks tabs on the bottom from keeping pets from coming in/out depending on what you need it for. I've used it a couple times for when we are doing projects in the garage. The locks are pretty sturdy but I think with enough force it could come unlocked.
