The 2mm lead feels smooth on paper and doesn’t snap easily like thinner mechanical leads, which makes it great for quick jotting and rough sketching. The push-clutch mechanism is simple, reliable, and kind of addictive to click if I’m being honest. A couple tradeoffs to know before buying: this isn’t a clicky 0.5mm mechanical pencil you use straight out of the box and forget about. Because it’s a 2mm lead holder, you’ll want a lead pointer to keep the tip sharp, otherwise the line can get a bit thick for fine writing. There’s also no built-in eraser, so you need a separate eraser on the desk. None of that bothers me personally, but it’s something to consider if you wanted a all-in-one everyday school pencil. Staedtler only makes 780C's now so they are the same no matter what you order. The 780BK iis a blister pack from what I've read. **Q: Do I have to buy special “lead”?** A: I only use stadtler lead. It is strong, smooth and very consistent even in the hard grades. 2mm is easy to find. 0.3 or 0.5mm are a little harder in the harder grades but really worth looking for. **Q: Does this come with the sharpener in the top of the pen?** A: Yes, the little hole on top of the cap is the sharpener, just remove the cap and get enough graphite, insert it into the hole and twist it many times until you get the desire tip, then tap the cap onto a towel to remove the residue. **Q: Is the lead supposed to just slide out? I have the right brand and size and it slides out when I try to dispense it.** A: When you press the button at the back it opens the grippers and lets the lead slide in or out. Let go of the button and the holder grabs the lead so you can write with it.
