Two Door Cinema Club have recently received the auspicious nod from the BBC after being named as one of the 15 acts on the BBC Soundpoll as well as featuring in numerous end of year tips for 2010. The album is undeniably Pop, but draws on disparate elements including Electronica/Electro, Rock and Afrobeats whilst remaining resolutely fresh and inventive. Pigeon-holing this band will be impossible. The only constant between songs is the length of them: short, sharp and sweet. The songs average out at a Pop-perfect 3 minutes. Fun and catchy returns to music *by S***S on August 19, 2013* I am a huge fan of early 80's New Wave/Alternative music, and assumed that sound was dead and gone from 1984 onward. But within the last year it's come to my attention that there has been a bit of a New Wave revival happening (Next Wave, New New Wave, Post-Punk Revival, Modern Wave Pop, whatever you want to call it), so I had to investigate. One of the treasures I uncovered from this expedition was 'Tourist History'. My introduction was the video for the extremely catchy 'What You Know' with its clearly 80's inspired visuals, such as the white background and quirky choreography.'Tourist History' did not disappoint. So many of the songs were immediately memorable and catchy, and I liked the somewhat nerdy school boy look of the band. Track after track will have you tapping your feet or help you wake up in the morning: 'Undercover Martyn', 'Something Good Can Work', 'Eat That Up, It's Good For You', etc. But it doesn't stop with just the tracks on this album. If you are able to get your hands on the additional tracks from this period: 'Kids' and 'Costume Party', then you will get two of the bands best songs. I play something off this album nearly every day. The band are young enough to have the energy and excitement of youth, and it shows. And I'm old enough that I can still appreciate how these qualities have been sorely missed from music for more than twenty years.Unfortunately, the band returned with their follow up album 'Beacon', and showed that the party was already over. While the songs still had some of the classic and wonderful analog keyboards, the fun was all but gone. It was a bland attempt to become more adult, and the lyrics and music suffered as a result. I was so disappointed. Despite all the blind praise of the cattle-like fanbase that they earned from the 1st album making false statements that 'Beacon' is just as good as 'Tourist History', I hope the band reassess things for their 3rd album and bring back some of the fun and youthful charm. It would be a shame to write them off already as a band who had great debut album and that's it.Tech note: Typical of modern day CD's, the sound is turned way too loud and most of the dynamics are squashed out. But since I was such a fan of the album I purchased the vinyl LP, and was horrified to find that it had simply been mastered from the CD! There was no dynamic range. Many audiophiles continue to purchase vinyl because the format does not allow mastering volumes to be too loud to reduce dynamic range, but when the label is using an already compressed source to master from, it completely defeats the purpose. You can't win these days, unless there will be a Mobile Fidelity remaster in the future. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Really nice album! *by K***. on January 14, 2023* Randomly found TDCC when I heard Something Good Can Work, and I fell in love with their pop-rock style! It seems like I'm randomly discovering a lot of early 2000s UK artists recently, and I'm not disappointed! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Best new album I've heard in 2011 *by P***E on April 19, 2011* Once again Amazon's recommendations come through. I was in need of some new music and hadn't really gotten hooked on anything I'd recently purchased. Went to Amazon and typed in Miike Snow (my favorite album of the last 2 years) and found that others who had purchased that album also purchased Tourist History. So on a whim (and a low price of $5.99) I decided to buy it. Great decision! I've basically been listening to it non-stop since I bought it about a week ago and even some of the songs that I wasn't in love with at first have started to grow on me.This is the type of album you could play from start to finish and not skip a single track. It would even work well if you shuffled the songs.
