Review: Worth a try - This may help someone looking at these strings: I have a Martin Custom D (I believe it's basically a D-15 with a spruce top) that I bought a couple years ago as my lifetime guitar. I haven't even changed the strings on it yet, but they were getting old and grungy so it was time. I think they were Martin PB mediums. They sounded great, but I thought they were a tad high on tension and thickness. I play electric too so I prefer slightly lighter strings. I decided to give these Silk and Phosphor custom 11 Martins a try. Stringing them was a breeze as I could right away tell they were thinner and more flexible than the original strings. I could tell right away my Custom D lost plenty of volume. From the first chord I finger picked, I was a bit disappointed in the loss of volume and presence. I would be embarrassed to play my guitar in a bluegrass jam with these strings. On the other hand, for practicing around the house and fingerpicking, they are pretty dreamy. I would imagine to move up to the next gauge in these silk and phosphors would help bring up the volume a good bit. They also retain the guitar's natural sound profile, so playing is still a pleasure. The bass is drastically reduced but the mids and treble tones are still there. The guitar has lost some of that signature Martin ring and bass , but I know I can always get it back if I swap back to regular PBs. These strings definitely make my Martin sound a bit more like a Taylor strung with Elixirs, if anyone is interested, which I know most will not be. But it's good to know I can experiment and get different sounds out of the same guitar. For the price, these are worth a try and I have no regrets, especially as practice strings! Just thought I'd update this review: as these strings aged , they actually got better. I swapped them off my Custom D and onto a Martin OM-15. They lost any brightness but they still have a great fundamental tone. They sound close to Martin monel strings now. I still love them and they're getting dark with age but still ring true and sound amazing. Great value!
Review: Great for older guitars with problems. - I bought these for my 96 Fender DG acoustic I've had since new. The guitar has been all around the country and used in places Camping, the beach ECT not good for acoustic guitars. Plus it doesn't spend much time in a case and has never seen a humidifier. So, it has issues. I built and installed a bridge doctor but the neck needs reset as well. These strings are a nice stepdown in tension and help the guitar to be playable. The sound is good and I've gotten a year out of the set. They are a good value and option to keep a old workhorse around a few more years.

## Features

- PROFESSIONAL GUITAR STRINGS: Discover your guitar’s true voice. These strings feature a lighter-gauge version of our Superior Performance core wire combined with heavier wrap wire to deliver a full and balanced tone with increased playability. They’re available in extra-light, custom light, light, and medium gauges.
- HIGH-QUALITY DESIGN: Made from 92/8 phosphor bronze, these acoustic strings feature top-quality bronzed-steel core wire and bronze wrap wire. They provide increased flex with huge bends and less finger fatigue, making them perfect for beginners.
- FLEXIBLE CORE: Best for rigorous practice and performance, our phosphor bronze strings are ideal for finger-style playing and note bending. If you have finger fatigue after playing or wish bending notes was easier, these lighter-gauge strings are the solution.
- VERSATILE STRINGS: String gauge is an important part of getting the best sound out of your guitar. We recommend using only our extra-light through medium-gauge strings on our guitars. Light-gauge strings have a lighter, shiny sound that gives an airy volume and are great for smaller-bodied guitars.
- THE TONE YOU DESERVE: For every handmade element we craft, we never forget why we do it: to help you set your creativity free. You’ll find a wide range of Martin strings that fit your instrument and playing style. Enjoy incredible tone, no matter what you play.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: My problem is some stings are to stiff and hard to push down on the neck. The ones I have now are hard to push down are these soft or hard strings?**
A: These are great strings, but they are medium gauge strings. For strings that are easier to push down I would recommend Light or Extra Light strings.

**Q: Is the custom gauge set for the silk and phosphorus strings or silk and steel? The selection (custom) and picture are of 2 different products.**
A: The Silk and Steel are a nickel plated string- softer to the touch. The silk and phosphorus sound more like a acoustic. The nickel you will loose some volume. More like a electric string

**Q: Are these correct for my martin 12 string dm-12 acoustic guitar?**
A: i do not have a 12 string,but martin strings is all i use

**Q: what is what is the difference in "silk & phosphor" and "phosphor bronze" strings? Which One has warmer and deeper lows?**
A: There is No difference except- the silk have been made a little softer to the touch. Like-slightly sanded off, they are warmer and deeper. They do not last quite as long but worth it to my ear. I’ve played for 25 years- To get a warmer sound you need a Nylon pick. I love the Dunlap 1.38mm Jazz pick. Then I take some 2000 grit sand paper ( you have to buy at auto parts store) and Buff both sides and edge of pointing end that hits the string. Trust me. Makes it Creamy warm. Sometimes works better than other times. But I love it! So all you hear is the Note instead of all the bright metallic overtones. Good luck

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great strings!
*by K***. on January 11, 2026*

D'Addario strings are great! I have their XS Phosphor Bronze on my guitars but tried the Silk n Steel on the mahogany guitars and they are fantastic. Adding mellow tones to the sound. I saw these Silk and Phosphor and had to try them. I put them on a new 0 sized spruce and rosewood guitar. Easy on your fingers, do very well on bending and add just a little brightness to the mellow tone. I have already ordered more.
