While the Ventures' most influential and most commercially successful phase was in the early sixties, this album provides a snapshot of the end of the decade, with contemporary hits of Joe South, Glen Campbell, and Tommy Roe, television show music, movie theme music, and medleys of music from the musical "Hair" and the recent hits of Dennis Yost and the Classics IV all packed in. Of course, the highlight is the Ventures' remake of the theme from the television program "Hawaii Five-0," in a mix that's slightly more guitar-oriented than the single mix. The production really is quite good, but there's a certain kitschiness to the Ventures' late sixties work that makes it border on elevator music. There's still a feel of cool detachment, but some of the edge was gone. Why? Gerry McGee was the group's new lead guitarist at this point and, in all honesty, the Ventures really missed the edginess of Nokie Edwards on this release. I casually let the rest of the album play -- after listening to that theme song [at the start of the album] -- twice. Okay, already knowing I really liked that song -- I was still thrilled by the [seeming] skill, precision and enthusiasm. Upon immediate second hearing -- listening in [cool] *full music critic mode* -- I was amazed by the [actual] skill, precision and enthusiasm radiating from this Hawaii Five-O song. Then, I casually let the other songs play -- still not expecting much. Afterall, the very name of this album is just *Hawaii Five-O*. WELL, the [ongoing] skill, precision and enthusiasm radiating from all these songs -- caused me to greatly wonder if such musical artistry was respected at all in general. The answer is related to the review title that is a well-known quote -- that I learned of after some quick research online. They are rated by some as the best-selling instrumental rock band ever -- and are fully worthy of this and that 1000 bands quote about them. First let me say that I have been a Ventures fan since 1960. The Hawaii Five-O album (no CD's then) was released in 1968. The Ventures used a full orchestra for most if not all of the songs on that album. This was another facet in the Venture's approach to some great music.As for the "NEW" Hawaii Five-O, it's great. This is the way that Hawaii Five-O should have sounded. More guitar less orchestra. This version has a punch to it, it has a true Ventures groove! The remix is clean and the sound is simply fantastic. The songs have been redone or remixed and all sound great. I have had this in my cd player since I received it a month ago and it has been played constantly!It sounds fresh. It sounds like a brand new band releasing their first CD. Lots of energy. It sounds great.
