What's the best way to make them clear or, optimally, like the photo? Call ILM?** A: Boil the water first. If you have very minerally water (ie well water) try using purified bottled water. Regardless boil it first. The hazyness comes from microscopic bubbles trapped in solution. Boiling causes those microscopic bubbles to dissipate and you get left with crystal clear ice once its frozen. Makes for quite the dramatic effect with this ice cube maker, IMO. **Q: Has anyone tried baking with it yet?** A: I don't own one of these, but have owned silicone bakeware in the past, and have had mixed results with it. Silicone is a good insulator of heat, and so you'll likely need to increase the recipe temperature slightly (if it's still in the tolerable range of the material, which I believe is 450 for silicone bakeware, but don't quote me on that.) The packaging wasn't anything special. I was actually slightly disappointed since I picked this brand of Star Wars ice cube over others on Amazon since I saw in one of the pictures a box in reference to the height. I incorrectly assumed from seeing the picture of the box that the product would be packaged in a box. It wasn't, and was merely put in a small plastic bag inside a slightly larger shipping plastic bag from China. I wanted a box, as it was a gift, but the fact it wasn't in one isn't too big of a deal, it's just a bit of false advertising. As far as the product itself, I'm impressed! I gave it to my dad and was instantly excited to try it out. Upon filling the hole on top up and freezing it overnight, I discovered two things. 1. The water should not be filled to the top. 2. This is very difficult to pry open after taking out of the freezer. The physics of water expanding when turning from a liquid to a solid completely went over my head and so the first time the water had frozen over the hole in the night. I've tried several times since and it's always fun to see how it turns out. I use tap water and it never shows as crystal clear. It also often has cracks and a rim around the middle of excess ice. But despite all of the gripes I still love it and my dad does too. It was cheap, and it's a fun little item. The result may not be perfect but we aren't building a real Death Star here or something to rival Echo base, we're making ice balls to put in my dad whiskey that begin to melt and lose detail within minutes. Regardless of my criticisms, I think it serves it's purpose and I shall continue to try to use this mold and create the perfect Death Star.
