Using cotton pillowcases with them does seem to allow them to breathe nicely and they feel nice and cool and not sweaty like plastic ones can be. Currently using them on top of some regular pillows - I think two of these stacked on top of each other may well be too high for a lot of people. But using them like this is a great height for me, and they nestle your head nicely even when side sleeping, without all the filling moving out the way and leaving you with no support like so often happened with my old pillows.
