It has no smell, just freshness. It works with our grey-water plumbed washer (all our plants are thriving), it only takes 1 oz to clean a big load in my HE washer. But, the best part is: If I pour a little bit of the detergent directly on a stain, even an old stain, it almost always gets the stain out! Most common stains I have had success with are baby poop, spit-up, blood, and food stains. Also, this product doesn't irritate my new born's skin nor my husband's sensitive skin.
