## Description

Product Description The Katadyn TRK Drip Gravidyn free-standing gravity filter features a 10 liter water container for large quantities of water. It's ideal for the water supply for camps, cabins and homes without running water. This Gravidyn version comes with three combined ceramic and activated carbon filter elements. Ceramic filters have a micro porous structure with impregnated silver which delays the growth of bacteria. The pore-size of Katadyn ceramic filters is 0.2 micron (0.0002 mm). Bacteria range in size from 0.2 to 5 micron and, like protozoa (1 to 15 micron), are efficiently filtered out. Ceramic filters can be mechanically regenerated and the filter capacity is measurable. Activated carbon is used for its ability to reduce harmful organic and inorganic substances in the water. It removes unpleasant tastes, odors, chlorine, pesticides (lindane, DDT) and trihalomethanes (THMs). These substances adhere to the large surface area of the activated carbon. Activated carbon granulate cannot be regenerated. The Katadyn TRK Drip Gravidyn free-standing gravity filter features a 10 liter water container for large quantities of water. Excellent tasting water

*by M***C on Reviewed in the United States on April 14, 2018*

My filters are orange and not white like the pictures. We are using it to filter tap water in our home. The water tasted dusty at first and I had second thoughts about the gravidyn. I ran about 7 full containers of water (about 20 gallons) through it now the water tastes very good and comparable to store bought filtered water. I'm very happy with it.*edit* I've had the Gravidyn 6 months now. I went to the hardware store and purchased a wooden cork and put it in one of the holes. I am using two filters but I honestly bet that even just one filter is good enough for our family of three. With two filters, it takes about 8 hours to filter a full container of water. The water tastes still tastes very good after 6 months of use. I am filtering tap water because our city water just reeks and smells of chlorine, but after going through the Gravidyn, it tastes like bottled water. I'm thinking of purchasing a few more filters. Right now, the Gravidyn has already paid for itself. We were purchasing about $40 of filtered water a month, so right now, we are drinking free water! I'm just very happy with the Gravidyn. I'm very impressed how well it is still working. I cook with the water, I use it in our coffee, and I even make ice with it in a counter top ice-maker. We are just very happy with this purchase and I recommend it to anyone looking to have great tasting water at home.*2nd edit, 9 month review* I thought I'd write a second review because I use the Gravidyn every single day and maybe my input will help the next purchaser. It has taken right at the 8 month mark for the original two gravidyn filters to stop filtering chlorine in the city water. The change was very fast too. It seemed to me that it went from good water to bad awful chlorine tasting water between refills. We were also dreading the dusty flavored water that we had when we first bought the unit. After thoroughly cleaning the unit, installing two new wooden plugs and using only ONE filter this time, it seems like there is NO dusty flavor at all. It is possible that the dusty flavor came from the plastic container itself and not the charcoal filters. So my recommendation for anyone getting the Gravidyn is to wash the plastic thoroughly. Scrub it good. I bet that will remove the dusty flavored water. I don't think the dust flavor that I experienced when I first bought the unit was from the charcoal filters. Anyway, it seems that one Gravidyn filter is more than enough for three people. I think if we had a fourth person here, one filter would still be fine. My recommendation is if the household has five people, two filters should be used and the third hole plugged. We are still enjoying our Gravidyn. We expect this filter to expire in four months since now one filter is doing twice the work. We shall see! Anyhow, the water still tastes great, bottled quality, we make ice cubes using the filtered water, we drink it all the time and couldn't be happier. I love the Gravidyn!*3rd edit, 1 year 3 months later*We are now using just one filter at a time for a family of three. One filter seems to last between 4-5 months, so it is a little over $10 per month. We are using wooden corks from our local hardware store for the other two holes. We replace the corks when we replace the filter. The water tastes great! This is one of my most satisfying purchases. We have a good system here at the home now. We have the Gravidyn on a water stand and below the spigot, we have a 5 gallon water container. We filter water through the Gravidyn and drain what is in the holding container into the 5 gallon water container beneath it. We do this so we have a good supply of water when we have guests and this also helps to ensure that our one filter can keep up with more people when necessary. I love this purchase and this is the reason I'm still updating my review.

Great filter at a good price.

*by A***N on Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2013*

This water filter is outstanding. No issues with assembly (5 minutes) and everything was tight on it. Haven't kept it outdoors, so don't know if bugs can get under the lid or not, like some have said. water tastes good, only ran about 2 gallons of rainwater through it. Haven't tried any foul water, but i would prefilter water with sediment in it anyway. I have a family of 5, and this produce enough water for us to drink and cook with each day in the event we need it. One cheap improvement i would make is by making the tap out of metal, i could see my kids breaking this one way or another. But, I sleep better at night knowing my family's basic need for clean water will be met with this Katadyn filter. Hope this helps.

Bought for emergency use - now using it every day

*by R***G on Reviewed in the United States on January 24, 2012*

Recently bought the Katadyn Gravidyn for my self-reliance/emergency kit, after we had a one-week "boil water advisory" following a hurricane. That experience just got me thinking that an extra layer of filtration would be a good idea, both for short-term and potential longer-term problems with the water supply.I was on the fence between the Gravidyn and the Ceradyn. The Ceradyn uses ceramic-only filters, which as I understand it, are effective filtration against biological hazards (e.g. bacteria, water-borne diseases, etc.) but which do not filter out inorganic pollutants (e.g. pesticides). The Gravidyn filters contain ceramic elements as well, but they also contain charcoal, which filters (at least reduces, if not eliminates) pesticides etc. The "ceramic-only" Ceradyn filters last much longer (the charcoal in the Gravidyn filters is only good for 6 months, and the filter must be replaced after that) but in my case, I felt it was more important to get the maximum filtration possible, so I opted for the Gravidyn.Good fact to know, however -- Katadyn confirmed to me that the Gravidyn filters are compatible with the Ceradyn base, and the Ceradyn filters are compatible with the Gravidyn base (I suspect the base unit is exactly the same, and the replaceable filter elements are the only thing that differs between the two models). So, if I ever decide that I want to go with the "ceramic-only" approach, I can simply purchase some Ceradyn filters and use those in my Gradidyn base (and, presumably, vice-versa). You'll find that the cost of the filter elements is the real expense for this product anyway. As far as the Gravidyn unit itself goes, I am very happy with it so far (after a couple weeks of using it). When I first screwed the spout piece on, I had a slow, small drip-leak around the spout, where it connects to the base, so I unscrewed it, adjusted it slightly, and screwed it back on, a littler tighter than the first time. Since then, I haven't had any issues with any leaking or dripping. The concept behind this filter is as simple as it gets -- pour water in the top part, and gravity will do the rest, as the water passes through the filer an into the lower part of the unit. A typical spout is the clean water outlet. I ran one 10-liter batch of water through the first time, and discarded that, per the instructions. After that, I have noticed that the filter started working a little quicker over time. It's pretty simple to keep this thing filled up, I have been filling it up (or half-filling it) at night before I go to bed, and by the morning we always have plenty of clean water to start the day.We set ours up in the kitchen, and now use it for all of our drinking/cooking water. I'll probably always keep one extra set of filter elements on-hand (there are three).I had been considering the Big Berkey filter system, and truth be told I do prefer the stainless-steel of the Berkey. However, I simply trust the Katadyn filters more, and since the plastic Katadyn unit is BPA-free, I'm not concerned about using plastic instead of stainless steel.
