The first one lasted about 3 years before I fried the cord. The cost of a new unit was not much more than the cord alone, so I went that way, and the new one has lasted a couple years with no problems. On the other hand the overall design is a mess. The top half of the display tells you what type of meat you are cooking. Even if you don't use that feature you will always see "BEEF" in big, bold letters. The on/off switch is a tiny little thing on the back of the unit. You set the temperature using the HR and MIN buttons to move the temp up or down, respectively. What could be more intuitive than that? And to this day I don't know what the MODE and TASTE buttons do, nor do I care.Bottom line is I decided to write this review because I'm going to retire this dinosaur and am checking Amazon for something better. I'm tired of this love/hate relationship. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ It's simple and very functional *by B***E on Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2012* I searched around Amazon quite a bit before finding this little gem. The product is very simple in design, it just reports the oven temp and the meat temp. It seems to work great, so far no problems or issues with the thermocouple.The product has a (very minor) drawback. If you use the alarm feature you can only increase the alarm temp, and once it hits the max it cycles around.. Hint: If you switch over to Centigrade mode this goes faster if you accidentally go past your desired set point. However, since the alarm isn't very loud I don't even bother with it at all.There are other, much fancier and overly designed products out there, but they have more parts that can break, require more batteries etc.. This one only requires a single AAA! Also, I really like that the probe handle measures the oven temp while the tip measures the meat temp, then you only need the have 1 wire sticking out of the oven to do both measurements. How useful!UPDATE: The temperature probe stopped working after a couple years, it just started to report inaccurate temperatures. It's a shame, I really liked this product and I am tempted to just replace it with another of the same unit (over a year is decent life for a plastic thing these days..) ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Still Working Great After Much Use. Alarm Could Be Louder. Recommended *by B***R on Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2013* I have wanted a probe thermometer for years but never got around to it. In November 2012 I decided I was done with checking the Thanksgiving turkey constantly. The opening and closing of the oven losing heat each time bothered me. I searched Amazon for one I could afford. I really wanted one with a remote but they were prohibitively expensive for me. This was a much better price. I struggled with the decision as we've really been having to watch our pennies since the recession hit. $25 won't break us but we can't afford to throw it away either. I kept hesitating over all the negative reviews and didn't want to pay the money only to find I only got one Thanksgiving dinner out of it or, worse yet, find it didn't work at all on the big day. I broke down and bought it, used it on Thanksgiving, and it worked perfectly. The setting of it can be a bit tricky but I got the hang of it pretty quickly. I've now used it for another Thanksgiving and a couple of turkeys we roasted in between for sandwich meat as well as pork roasts and different cuts of beef roasts. Our housemate is a chef and he has a tendency to put my instant read digital thermometer in his top pocket leaving me scrambling when I need it. I have pulled this out of the drawer and used it in a pinch and it worked well for that, too. It is still working perfectly today. The settings for the various meats are sometimes a little high for me as I tend to pull meats and let them reach final temperature during the resting phase but I found the pre-sets easy to override.The only complaint is the alarm is not loud enough to hear from another room. That is the reason I took one star off. It's not a big problem for me-just means I have to keep an eye on it but as my main purpose was to be able to check temps without opening the oven, that's not a big issue. Nothing in my kitchen is handled with care. This thing takes a beating like everything does when I cook. I should have reviewed earlier but I did want a good body of work behind the product before I commented. This one has stood the test of time and wear.
