Using pliers can result in damaging the edge of the pump body when pliers "rest" on the edge of the pump body. Such "resting" can dent the edge of the bronze pump resulting in a water leak where the edge was dented. This Sea Dog tool prevents such damage. The side clamping bolts are best replaced with hex head bolts in order to tighten the "grip" of the tool on the sides of the impeller.
