There might be other ways to use it but what I did was put about a TBSP of the granules in a gallon of water and let it soak for a few days and then I water with that soak water. Works like a charm! Just be sure to use all of the soak water in a short period otherwise it gets slimy and stinky. If you have a heavy infestation of gnats flying around, the adults will continue to lay eggs (it only kills the larva) so you'll want to repeat about every 7-10 day until you no longer see the adults. **Q: The content in 1 bottle is equivalent to how many donut shape mosquito dunk ??** A: About 11 Dunks worth, by my math: This bottle covers 2178 square feet and lasts up to 2 weeks. The Dunks cover 100 square feet each and last up to 1 month. So half of 2178 (because you must apply it twice as often) is 1087.5 square feet, which is about 11 Dunks. The dunks seem just a wee bit more expensive, but they're more convenient to use. On the other hand, if you have small areas of water, the bits are more efficient. On the other-other hand, you may cut up the dunks to use in smaller areas. My choice = both: Dunks for my tiny pond and Bits for the smaller standing water areas near my fencing. **Q: what is in it?** A: Bti (a natural bacterium; there are many types of BT) is toxic only to the larvae stage of mosquitoes, black flies, fungus gnats and some midges. It does NOT kill the eggs or adults; it kills the larvae after they hatch (and ingest the bti crystals which releases toxins in their gut), before they pupate and become nasty biting adults. It does not kill and is not toxic to fish, frogs, birds, mammals, humans and other insects (doesn't hurt dragonflies or their larvae either). The larvae have a certain type gut environment and enzymes that releases the toxin in the crystals and this kills the larvae by rupturing the cells in its gut. Because it only works on the larvae that is why you have to repeat treatments of the water areas and possibly use other means to control the adults that made it through or flew in from somewhere else. The bits and dunks are dried and are not living bacteria. The crystals/toxins come from the spores. Bits kill almost instantly, while the dunks release slowly and can be active for up to 30 days. So you could start off with the bits to quickly kill what larvae is there and then add in a dunk about a week later for longer protection. The dunks (not sure about the bits) have been approved for organic gardening by the USEPA too. Hope this helps. **Q: are bits and dunks the same strength?** A: As far as I can tell, yes. But I will say, the granules are easier for some uses (like in bromeliads), and dunks in others (the rain barrels, or ponds). I have and use both.
