Lycra)spandex?** A: According to the instruction book it does stretch fabrics. It does have a very nice stretch stitch. The machine is new to me. I tried it on a very stretchy piece of fabric and it worked well. I plan to use the stretch stitch to hem a pair of stretchy cargo pants. I love the machine. I had a Bernina for about 40 years and am very happy with their Bernette. However, if you plan to do a lot of embroidery, you may want the more expensive model. Hope this helps. **Q: Does this machine sew through thick material like 4 to 6 layers of denim?** A: No. You need a sailmakers (see Sail-Rite machines) heavy duty machine for that. This one is for lightweight fabrics and household use. **Q: Quilting? Does anyone use this machine?** A: I have made 3 quilts on this machine. The largest was full size. I use a 90/14 needle, adjust the tension to lower it just a bit, use the darning foot, and I use a meander stitch. It quilts through the cotton fabric, plus cotton batting, plus flannel on the back. It does this beautifully. I'm very pleased. **Q: How does this machine handle thicker fabrics (home dec)?** A: Of all the options in this price range, this is probably NOT the one for thicker fabric work. I'd recommend the HD3000 Janome, as it was designed to handle heavier needle strokes and has a thicker needle-to-plate distance. Thankfully I love my new machine. I have been sewing on my Mom's 1971 Bernina Bernette for years and it still runs like a champ, but there is a lot it can't do compared to newer machines. Ideally I would shell out the $1200 for a new Bernina model, but that is way out of my budget. This Bernette brand machine while not technically a Bernina, is quality controlled by Bernina. I love that it is an all mechanical machine meaning maintenance is easier and it won't require software updates. It feels sturdy without weighing a ton isn't overly loud while sewing and comes with easy instructions on how to use its many stitches. I sew a lot of clothes and this comes with all the features I need. It has a great stretch stitch for sewing with knit, the automatic buttonhole took me a bit to figure out, but it works well--I'd say the buttonholes come out slightly larger than needed, but you don't have to open it the whole way. It comes with the hemmer foot which is the best for turning small 1/4 hems for ruffles, scarves, etc. And the zipper foot, while different from the one I'm used to using, works well. It comes with 5 plastic bobbins but universal bobbins fit as well.
