It just extends the connection. The lights stay the same brightness when connected. **Q: Want light strips on the bottom & top of cabinets-need to snake thru cabinets to cont on top. Can I cut the lt strip- use conectr & use cut strip?** A: There is a way to do this, but it involves hand soldering. If you feel confident in your tech skills, you can google it. This cable, however, is just for connecting 2 complete strips together. I put a long strip on top of my cabinet, a short strip under my cabinet, and connected them with this cable, and it works great. **Q: Can you cut the strips to put under kitchen cabinet** A: If you cut strips you cannot extend them. If you are say running the 6' and then using the jumper between the 6' and a 3 foot it is okay to cut a portion off the end of the 3 foot, however the unused/cutoff portion is unusable. I spoke with Thomas (I believe the owner of the company selling the extensions) and he stated that he would look into a fitting that would connect two cut pieces together.
