I love her songs, her band, her videos and her albums. I've been to see her 4 times (in 4 very different situations) and she's been great every time. The Get Down Stay Down grows and shrinks every time I see them but the core seems to be the handsome, laid-back bassist, the portly but energetic and spot-on drummer and the totally hot and talented keyboard lady. Others seem to come and go. Once there was a tall skinny trumpet playing guy and an equally tall and equally skinny fiddle playing girl. Lately there's another guitarist who doesn't really add much. "A Man Alive" is Thao's most cohesive offering to date, with lovely melodies and solid beats. The songs, apparently dealing with her non-relationship with her absent father, are emotional, literate and honest. I love this album and I play it over and over. The only album I like better recently is Shiina Ringo's "Sosho Strip", but that's apples and oranges. I like apples and oranges. Look at that picture on the cover. Besides being immensely talented, Thao is also beautiful. This album is simply a must-have for any music lover. A lot more sound exploration and experimentation on this than her previous albums, but still stellar. Thao puts so much emotion into every song that you can really understand the depths of the themes she is singing about here. That being said, the album pales in comparison to their live shows, but is still worthy in any audiophile's collection.
