Radiohead - Amnesiac

Review: This is the best CD I own - I somehow missed-out on Radiohead, beyond Creep, and some other songs that got airplay, up until a month ago. I am a musician, and a huge music lover, with alternative rock from the 1960's through today being my favorite niche. I got a copy of this album and many of their others from a friend, but I never listened to them until I had my headphones on while doing some programming. I had gone through my entire REM collection, and my phone's music app just went to the next group alphabetically, and Radiohead's Amnesiac was next up. I was floored. Usually, I have to listen to any new album a few times before I start to appreciate it. This was love at first listen. I've now gone and bought just about every album of theirs on CD, so I can enjoy them at full quality on my "real" stereo, and because I don't believe in stealing music. If I like it, I'll buy the CD. I'm sure a lot of artists wish more fans would do this. Anyway, this album is superb. I already own over 500 CD's, everything from avant garde music by Brian Eno, top-notch studio rock from Steely Dan, everything by the Police, Peter Gabriel, Laurie Anderson, David Bowie, REM, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, STP, Chicago, Zappa, Machines of Loving Grace, Frank Black, Thomas Dolby, The Pretenders, Supertramp and countless others. I like to think I have a pretty good collection. Out of all of the albums I own, I think this one is the best. They have a very creative mix of rock, jazz, blues, and a mastery of electronics. Their piano, guitar, bass and rhythm, winds, etc. are all top notch, and they just play tight. And while I'd rate most of Radiohead's albums a 10 (I've been listening to just about their entire collection non-stop for the past month), this one is definitely my favorite of theirs. If you like dark, dreamy music, with loads of ambiance and layering, interesting lyrics, music that just begs you to tap your foot, and sing along with, something that reaches deep into your soul, you can't go wrong with this. I love it!!
Review: Misunderstood - Perhaps one of Radiohead's more underrated albums, Amnesiac stands as the sister album to their phenomenally abstract and experimental release Kid A, both of which sprang from the same recording sessions. Although to some this album may hardly compare to the epic shadow cast over it by its counterpart, it deserves recognition as an individual, provocative and moody piece of music. Sharing some of the electronic/abstract ideas and sounds set down by Kid A (most notably in songs like "Pulk/Pull Revolving Doors," and the warped "Like Spinning Plates"), there is also some unfamiliar territory exclusive Amnesiac. In songs such as "Life In A Glass House" and "You And Who's Army?" one is seemingly transported back into the hazy jazz scene of the 1930s and 40s complete with horn sections and piano. Other moments like the beautiful, melancholy "Pyramid Song," and the jazzy "Dollars And Cents" feature full string sections that create a moody atmosphere of full immersion and into the strange, unpredictable world of Radiohead.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Genius
*by G***T on May 1, 2012*

This might be Radiohead's darkest, most nihilistic work. Many of the songs focus on the pointlessness of life and the futility of struggle. "I Might Be Wrong", "Dollars & Cents", "Like Spinning Plates", the brutal "Knives Out", and the epic "Life in a Glasshouse" all reflect an existential angst concerning the essential meaninglessness (and meanness) of life. Many songs deal with oppressive forces that hold people down and make all struggle futile. Even the outwardly defiant "You and Whose Army", comes off less as a challenge to authority, than an empty boast by a defeated and hopeless victim. However, Amnesiac is also one of Radiohead's masterpieces - in fact the division among fans regarding Amnesiac astounds me. It is clearly much more than some toss-offs from Kid A. Some of Thom's best vocals, as well as some of the most haunting melodies of the band's career, are on this album. Bottom line, Amnesiac is a must-own for any Radiohead fan, and probably serves as an end point to the darkest material of their career. More recent works like In Rainbows and King of Limbs show Thom and the boys softening a bit... there is acceptance, and even a message of oneness with the natural universe. Whereas Amnesiac is dark, depressing, and hopeless. It is a monumental work of genius.
