Review: If you live in a hilly area, this cog is mandatory - I've been on a bit of a Raleigh 3 speed (or more like a Sturmey Archer AW hub) kick lately. I have had one for decades but rarely rode it, as it seemed it was geared too high, but I had other bikes and never thought of it. That one had a 17T cog on it. I more recently researched the issue and found how simple it is to change gear ratios. After buying my first 22T cog, now I love the bike. It will go up moderate hills with ease and still go fast enough to get somewhere at a decent pace, they all should have shipped with this setup. If you want to stop there with the review, that's fine. Otherwise, read on. So of course I went and bought more bikes. Two that I bought recently had 18T cogs and a third, a 20T. All run 46T chainrings. Researching deeper, the 18T cog is the typical standard. In gear inches , 46/18 gives you the following spread: 50, 66, 89 Perfectly fine for flat areas like most beach communities, but if you have ANY hills at all, you're going to struggle a bit. With the 17T, it's worse with a 53 gear inch low gear. That's about the same as a typical BMX bike is set to, for a comparison. Well, with the 22T cog, what was your easiest gear basically becomes the middle. Gives you a climbing option and still a "go faster" one too. 41, 54, 72. I believe this is the largest cog that Sturmey Archer makes. There's a 23T Shimano Nexus cog that will also fit these hubs, which would give you 39, 52, 69. Loses some top end speed and makes you want to be in high gear much more than with the 22T. But, it too is great with the hills. It's also good for a youngster with a little less leg strengh. The original 3 speed Raleigh Sports I've had forever now has the 22T on it, my wife's Raleigh Sports also has a 22T on it, my son's Raleigh Colt has the Nexus 23T on it and the 4th Raleigh that is currently running (and for sale) is a Sports with a 20T on it. If I decide to keep that one, I'll probably grab another 22T, or bring it to the beach and not have to worry about hills. I will also note, with the Sturmey Archer 3 speed (and probably all IGH setups), the lowest possible cog you should ever run would be one with half the teeth of your chainring. Do not go with a larger cog than 23T with a 46T chainring, or 22T with a 44, 20 with a 40, etc. The torque created on the hub is too much for it to take. So, if you try to solve the "this thing is too hard to pedal" issue at the chainring instead, be mindful of that. If you've gotten this far, thanks for reading my deep dive into Sturmey Archer AW 3 speed gear options.
Review: Makes long rides enjoyable - Makes beach bike riding easier on knees for long rides. I love A single speed. I'm all about exercise and health

## Questions & Answers

**Q: What is the inner diameter of the center/axle hole.**
A: I assume you are referring to the actual axle on the sturmey AW3 hub, not the cog as shown. The only reason the axle is hollow is to allow the shift spindle to be screwed in, and that part is universal. My point- I don't know, and there's no reason to worry bout it. If you mean the inner diameter of the actual cog shown, same thing. it's universal and fits all sturmey hubs. Fugedaboutit.

**Q: Will this fit correctly on a huffy nel lusso?**
A: Most likely yes

**Q: Will this fit a 1952 sa 3 speed (aw) hub?**
A: It fit on a 1961 and 1972 SA AW 3 speed. The chain will need to be longer.

**Q: Can this go on non-coaster brake bike?**
A: Yes; I bought one for a non-coaster brake bike (but it's true that coaster brake bikes have 1/8" chain and cogs).
