I need to know the very smallest inside diameter it can measure as well as the largest.** A: The smallest inside will depend how deep you go, but close to surface I would say 1mm or even less. It goes up to 150mm. **Q: could I use this to measure nut size so as to get the right socket?** A: Yes, you can. Measure the diameter of the nut from one flat side to the opposite flat side. That will be the size of the nut. **Q: what are the drops and diamond images on the ruler for?** A: The RedBlack-01 has drops on the ruler and the RedBlack-02 and RedBlack-03 versions have drops and diamonds on the ruler. I do not think they are for anything specific, other than decoration. The ruler is only necessary on dial calipers, because the dial only shows sub-inch measurements. On a dial caliper, you add the dial number to the inch number showing on the ruler to get the full measurement. On digital calipers, the full measurement is shown on the display. The ruler is left-over from the older dial calipers most likely for tradition. For under $10 though, I don't know if you can really beat the price. As far as precision, it only gets down to tenths of a millimeter and not hundredths or thousandths like a nicer set of calipers, but you'll likely be spending at least 5x-10x the price for that.
