Cast iron gets hot whenever it is used, and much of that heat is invariably absorbed by the handles. These silicone handle covers are an absolute necessity if you want to avoid excruciating pain and manual disfigurement, because you WILL forget and try to pick up your pan from the stovetop one day. Note that it's best to put them on before turning on the burner, as it's typically a two-handed process. Also, while they survive oven temperatures they still get very hot and will absolutely burn the hand of the unwary cook.
