Review: Great Product. Perfect for 2011 Thunderbolt-equipped Macs - Kudos to Kanex for making a product such as this and kudos to desertcart for the speedy delivery. This product gives me a USB 3.0 slot to use for my 2011 Macbook Pro at home or even on the go. So far it works perfectly. It definitely extends the usability of my laptop since I suddenly gained USB 3.0 transfer speeds. Transferring massive videos and RAW photos for storage is now less of a pain. To me, the eSATA port is just an added bonus. The Thunderbolt cable is permanently attached. I only wish the cable was thicker. All in all I am very much happy with this purchase. For those with Thunderbolt and USB 3.0 slots already built-in, it may only benefit you if you want to add another USB 3.0 slot or if you need the eSATA port.
Review: Awesome and works! - I had purchased a 4-bay drive enclosure with USB3 and, like many others purchasing similar units, they all seem to have sporadic USB3 disconnects regardless of OS (I use a Mac) - I personally think the USB3 standard should have been taken for a test drive around the track a few more times, but that's not to debate here. Having tried a USB3 to eSATA adapter that was an utter failure, then found this product. This item was the perfect fit to use the eSATA connection on the box with Thunderbolt. I have a home server that is on 24x7 and this has been rock solid for me. There was, literally, nothing to do but plug the Kanex adapter in, hook up the external drive box with eSATA and everything just worked. This adapter has no drivers needed at all, is small, and pretty well built. I've not had a chance to try the USB3 port on this item, but I'm sure it will work great as well. My only suggestion for the next version is a standard Thunderbolt cable instead of the permanently attached one. Kanex could do this and include a short version which would allow users to purchase the length they need, if they need it. It's a small suggestion for an overall excellent product.

## Features

- Extend the use of your existing eSATA-equipped external storage unit by connecting it to your Mac. Since many users are still on eSATA equipment this adapter will add value by adding USB 3.0 support.
- Conveniently, the Kanex Thunderbolt to eSATA adapter adds an extra SuperSpeed USB 3.0 port to your Mac or PC computer so users can connect to more everyday peripherals, like external hard drives, a keyboard or mouse
- Minimum system requirements are Mac: OS X V10.8.4 and above and Windows 7 and above (32-bit and 64bit)
- If a customer is using windows, drivers are needed and they can be obtained through our website.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Did anybody measure the USB 3.0 or the eSATA performance?**
A: I averaged between 600 MB/s and 625 MB/s on the USB port with a Toshiba external USB 3.0 optical drive. My MacBook Pro backup is an eSata RAID-1 with monitoring software; the monitoring software is telling me that I'm pushing 625 MB/s. One thing I've noticed is that the KTU10 tends to run on the very "warm" side with an eSata device attacked. Other than that, the Kanex KTU10 performs better than I expected.

**Q: Does this adapter support eSata port multiplication? I am trying to connect an iMac to a drive tower with five jbod drives.**
A: I distinctly remember it working back on Sierra with my 2012 MacBook Pro. Today on High Sierra and Mojave it's a no go. The adapter is recognized, the USB port works, but the eSATA 5 drive enclosure that used to work with it no longer does.

**Q: Can the eSATA and USB3 ports be used simultaneously, or must they be used one at a time?**
A: They can be both used at the same time, in fact I just copied a 10GB folder from an eSATA drive to a USB3.0 one at about 60MBps - About two minutes - (the drives are 3TB and 4TB respectively, and very full, so maybe that affected the speed performance.) There is, however, a difference in read and write speed, specially in the eSATA vs firewire800 department. (The 3TB is a FW800+eSATA Lacie Quadra) Hope it helps!

**Q: Will this work for a elgato hd60s game recorder. my 2012 imac doesn't have usb 3.0 ?**
A: This will take your thunderbolt port and give you USB 3.0 on you 2012 iMac. I did this to a 2011 21.5" iMac and have had absolutely zero problems. It was recognized immediately and have had no connectivity issues with a Seagate 8TB USB 3.0 HDD for movies using Plex. The HD60S does not have a USB A port. it has USB-C. You would need to get an additional USB-A to USB-C cable here on Amazon with this and it should work.

However, I'm not a gamer. the operative work is "should" you would need to check if the HD60S is interoperable with Macs. doing a quick google the 2012 iMac had Ivy Bridge CPU's which are 3rd gen CPU's for the core i* series. HD60S requires a minimum of 4th gen CPU's. YMMV but I would say it's not a good fit for your Mac.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Awesome and works!

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Small and convenient compared to my Akitio Thunderdock, but I still can't get the port replicator to work...
*by L***N on March 23, 2017*

Works great other than the fact that I can't get the port replicator function to work with a eSATA dual HDD dock (Thermaltake BlacX duet). It works fine on my old PC and both drives show up fine, but only one drive is seen my both this adapter and my Akitio Thunderdock on my new retina iMac and Late 2011 MacBook Pro (w/o native USB 3.0). Both of my Thunderbolt adapters are supposed to support port replication, so I have no idea what's going on. I rarely use the dual dock anyway, so not a deal breaker for me. Other than that, both devices work great to allow for high speed transfer using eSATA and USB 3.0 external drives. The Kanex has fewer ports, but is my preferred adapter for the MacBook Pro since it doesn't require an external power brick, is much smaller, and easier to carry in a laptop bag and use on the go. The Akitio (version 1), has double the USB 3.0 and eSATA ports, includes FireWire for connecting to older drives and video cameras, but requires a power brick, is nearly the size of a paperback book, and isn't really convenient for traveling.
