It wouldn't be for a beginner or those not really interested in 'serious' & classical figurative,art, but for those interested in learning all those aspects of art teaching that we were in danger of losing in the C20th century, this is a 'must'. As an artist & art tutor of over 30 years I find it inspiring, not overwordy and very relevent in terms of advocating the point that art can be taught, and that there are principles the serious student should at least be aware of if not learn consciously. I enjoyed and shared this book with others and will continue to enjoy it. Review: Excellent book for ideas on drawing - I found books by Juliette Aristides at the local library but they are so good and useful that I bought this one and another to have for reference over and over. Years ago I used the Betty Edwards books to begin a process. In those books, the idea of sight measurement was introduced very late. It was because students complained that it was boring. Juliette Aristides introduces the idea in three ways and stresses the importance of learning it early. I couldn't agree more. Training the eye and mind to see proportions would seem intuitive but anyone who has tried to learn to draw knows otherwise. Juliette makes this much easier to grasp. It has made all the difference in my enjoyment of drawing. It is thoroughly researched. Each chapter is carefully narrated. You will learn an immeasurable amount as you work your way through the book. Like the other books that Juliette Aristides has authored I am of the view that this book will be of greater benefit to someone who has been drawing and or painting for a while. Such a person will have experienced some of the issues that arise in doing art and the book will give perspective to and invaluable assistance to such a person. It may appear more academic and not so interesting to someone who is picking up a pencil or paint brush for the first time. Reading these books caused me to reflect on maybe travelling to the art school Juliette Aristides teaches at just to experience first hand her ideas and skills. I highly recommend this book and the other books for someone who is an artist and wants to understand more of the traditional school of realism. This book is hard back and great value.
