History: I have a Siberian Husky about to be 3 years old named Shiva. Except the fact that she has slight corneal lipidosis and a bit hard to maintain proper weight, shiva has always been in good health. I have always used natural sulfate free shampoos and conditioners as well as give a skin/coat supplement because my dogs' (I have a wolf hybrid as well) coats and skin are very important to me. She is on Hill's Ideal balance regular formula since its the only diet that keeps good weight on her. Besides that, in the past she's had raw diet and several kinds of grain free kibble, most namely Nature's Variety. Besides 20 mg of Pepcid AC every other day, she has no other history of medications. Doing all this, a couple of weeks ago shiva had an inflamed area (what seemed like a hotspot) midway through her tail. She chewed it since it itched. When I spread the hairs it seemed to have become a pus exuding wound. So I shaved the area, cleaned, disinfected it, put triple antibiotic, and bandaged her wound, thinking it might have been a severe red ant bite or some sort. At this time shiva was also blowing her coat, but I noticed that she was blowing a lot more hair than usual. Fast forward a few days and she began to constantly itch her back. I shaved the area to reveal a 10x4 inch section of her back to have what appeared to be a rash with pistules (A small inflamed elevation of skin containing pus) randomly scattered thought the skin. Alarmed, I disinfected it with Fungisan and bought her an elizabethan collar. Knowing that this will mean a trip to the vet, I knew the protocol for something like this. Being a vet tech student, I knew that rightfully shiva needed a biopsy for diagnosis. However, most vets do not do biopsies outright. It usually starts with blood work, a fungus/bacteria culture, perhaps a skin scraping, and if all of those were negative, THEN you may get a biopsy. However even BEFORE all that, shiva would have most likely started out with antibiotics and a steroid shot, both short term possible solutions but not THE solution. Which means around $500+. My school loans haven't come in yet and it wouldn't be for a month till it is disbursed so I scattered for funds, but to no avail. Day by day her skin condition got worse and worse. During these days I researched high and low, through my books as well as the internet. I came upon an apparently common condition known as Zinc-Responsive Dermatosis. Known symptoms being skin lesions including generalized erythematous-crusted papules, often pruritic, accompanied by hyperkeratosis, erythema and swelling of footpads and eye areas. Besides the feet and eye symptom, she had the rest, so I looked into treatment. Turns out, all that the dogs needed was a zinc supplement. I looked at the pros and cons of giving a zinc supplement and possible overdose if in fact shiva did not have ZRD. I took my chances according to my situation and bought a bottle on 1-day delivery. At this point shiva's back was not getting any better and when I would just ever so slightly touch the area, she would cry out in pain. Within about 4-5 days of giving her Zinpro, I saw a difference on her back. It started to heal and the inflammation was indeed going down. The pistules started to dry up but I was cautious to still have doubts. My doubts were slowly lifting as time went by. By week 2, the skin is nothing but dried up crusts of healing skin (dandruff like mainly) and almost no odor was exuding from her back side and no pain! I am convinced that shiva does indeed have ZRD syndrome I. Her coat has ceased shedding so much and looks more even now. Extra Info: If shiva were to be non responsive to treatment I would have definitely gone to see a dermatologist when my loans were to come in. I took the chance because I felt that it was devastating me to see my dog in that state and I could not wait. I take pride in taking great care for my dog children and it was painful for me to watch shiva like that. Research though has indicated that ZRD syndrome I is a genetic condition that can be passed down in bloodlines. I stopped blaming myself but I would never trust the place where I bought Shiva again due to faulty breeding. From start of treatment till now (2 weeks into zinpro) I have left the collar on her and continue to do so until her pruritis (itchiness) would cease. I would recommend the same since this is an itchy/painful condition. I do not condone doing this yourself like I did. I would indeed recommend seeing your vets please. My case with Shiva may not be your case with your dog and you may not see similar results. I am thankful that I have saved Shiva from further painful procedures as well and I guess some money. It was not the possible vet cost that made me do this, I could't care less if I had to pay 10 times that, but at the moment I was a broke college kid trying to help my dog with the nursing skills I was taught and personal parental concern. Thanks to honest Amazon reviews and resources I was able to cure my lovely Shiva. But it was really the amazon reviews and the reviewers' experience that really pushed me to buy this product. Thank you Amazon!
