He has owned my heart since ‚Enders Game‘

It is a unique world with powerful magic and a few very kind and flawed folks - it is an Orson Scott Card book, what more needs to be said?

Good book -- but some sloppy details

It's a good book but I already read Pathfinder, so my enjoyment was a little spoiled. Like having a profound conversation with someone with a booger hanging out of his nose, I was unable to overlook some of the details.1. Walmart is not a nike retailer...but why even mention walmart or nike? Why didn't he go to "Sunny's Store" and steal running shoes? Or gate the pair & clothes rack right out of the store to sit in front of him? If walmart and nike went out of business tomorrow and I came back to read this book in 20 years (or my kids rather) would they know what "I'm going to buy Nikes at walmart" meant?2. Recycled characters. Already read these chars in pathfinder: Hull the nighttime cook/baker who gave a corner of the kitchen to sleep in was already used. Again the queen character who pretends to be meek and obedient and had no confidants and turned out to be this hugely ambitious secretly powerful sociopath who gets the mate she wants so is ready to kill off the lover & firstborn.3. Unbelievable motivations. Wad's world: Considering people bred for the best gene-line to begin with, the queen would want to keep Wad's baby. Maybe not Wad but more on that in a second. The important thing is that the public believed the firstborn belonged to the king--mission accomplished...the king's line & power continues whether his genes are in the mix or not. If the king knew the baby wasn't his he may even still want to keep up the ruse because again that's a powerful child under his control/protection. Now on to Wad -- kept as the kitchen squirrel? Yeah right. King should have noodled it out and used him to improve trading/wealth. Wad should have been appointed grand vizier with everyone vying for his loyalty. But instead the queen gets the king to mate with her so she decides to get rid of the firstborn, even though the firstborn is named heir? huh? Contrast with the I-don't-need-you-kids-anymore queen from Pathfinder: the queen allied with someone contingent on that HIS heirs and not the already existing ones inherit. Her motivation to kill the kids was unfortunate but she needed the protection/power of her new husband and that was the trade-off. Still short-sighted but fit that story a little betterIf Oath/Trick needed to be killed off, then it could have happened in an accidental attempt to assassinate Wad or something along those lines but the queen wanting to terminate him did not fit. It's a good story otherwise :-) Good foundation.

The first Orson Scott Card books I read were from the Alvin Maker series. I loved them. So when I had the opportunity to read The Lost Gate, I knew that I could look forward to a good read. I was not at all disappointed.Danny North is the main character. He is a bit of a trickster, but he comes by that honestly. He comes from a familywith unique talents and unusual values. Danny himself is a bit different, and as we come to learn quite a lot more interesting and a very worthy of being the central character. Not only does Card write of magic, but he weaves it into his stores, weaves it into a perfect whole cloth of magic and adventure. There was not a single character that I felt was out of place or unnecessary. Not one stray thread. This is of course the first of a series, and I have to say that I look forward to finding out where Danny North and his extraordinary friends and companions will go next. Much like the characters in the Alvin Maker series, each one has his own "knack" or gift. They are used for good of course...most of the time. There are plenty of twists and turns ans surprises. Even though Danny is only a boy when we meet him, I never had the feeling of reading a young adult or children's book. His world is fraught with plenty of grown up decisions and dangers.I found this to be a book that was difficult to put down. As the first book in a series it did spend plenty of time setting up what is to come. But this was done seamlessly and with true attention to the tale to be told in this book. To say that there was never a dull moment sounds trite but in this case it is true. We find ourselves in schools, museums and a few less savory places. Danny never let me down. No matter what I thought he would do, he managed to find a different and better way to resolve the situation. I can hardly wait to see what his older more mature self does in the books to come.
