I use it to drain 40 gal hot water heaters **Q: Can this pump handle silt or dirty water. I do excavation and need something to drain puddles and tire tracks.** A: I would limit the dirt as it will score the inside of the housing. It was first used for emptying toilet tanks, when the gaskets were going bad. It sucked out the water so fast, I was shocked. Just a few seconds were that was required to pump out several quarts of water. I prefer battery-powered devices when working around water. It is very effective and surprisingly quiet for the amount of power. I bought a spare impeller, because it is not clear how long it will last if the water being pumped is full of rust particles or other debris. I have not found this to be a problem.
