Unfortunately, for the length of tie that he needs, the selection of ready-made clip on ties is quite limited. There are places where you can pay to have regular ties converted to clip-on ties, or you can do it yourself inexpensively with these clips.The clips don't come with instructions, so here's how to use them. A clip on tie's length is not adjustable after it has been made, so before you begin, you need to decide how long you want the tie to be. The finished tie should come to the middle of the belt when worn. For reference, my son is six feet tall and wears about a 20 1/4" tie, including the knot. Standard sizes are typically 19" for shorter men and 21" or even 23" for taller men.To convert a tie, the first step is to knot the tie over the clip. This is described in the YouTube video "How to make a clip on necktie." I have found that the knot itself takes up about 4 inches. So if you want a 20" long tie (including the knot), make the first fold over the clip at a point 24" from the tip of the front of the tie. Then follow the video to tie the knot. Be sure to test these measurements on your own tie. After tying the knot, make a few stitches to hold the knot in place, as shown in the video. Don't worry about the little grommets that come with the clips -- you won't need them when using this method.But you are not done yet. This leaves a foot or so of the tail of the tie hanging down below the front of the tie. Presumably you could tuck the tail into the shirt between the buttons to hide the excess and call it a day. But if you want a finished clip on tie, you need to shorten the tail. You can refer to the YouTube video “How To Shorten/Tailor A Tie.” This method shown on the video is great except for one detail: it doesn’t leave any margin around the tip lining on the end of the tail, so the lining is exposed (in the video it is black). A better way to replace the tip lining would be, after ironing the folds in the shortened tail, pin the tip lining (also with the raw edges folded under and ironed) in place, leaving a margin at the edges, and sew it on by hand, so it resembles the lining at the large end of the tie. Or you can do it by machine the professional way by following the instructions at Twenty First Century Woman How to Make a Men’s Tie Properly (follow steps 2 through 4) or Iconic Patterns Italian Jedi Trick. (Hint: try it with some scrap fabrics first.)
