I found it difficult?** A: I squeeze the exterior outer housing to secure the cork and then reverse the handle rotation. It can be difficult on synthetic corks and occasionally real ones. **Q: The cork remained in the housing (that fits around the bottle) -- it was very hard to remove; what am I doing wrong?** A: You’re not doing anything wrong. It’s the stiffness of the housing of the corkscrew. The only thing I’ve figured out to do (and the possibilities are few) is to squeeze the cork with your fingers through the two open slots formed by the housing and turn the screw to remove it from the cork. But, be careful. You can get pinched. And some corks are just extra solid or something. I once had to resort to pliers to grip the cork. Which is about when I switched back to using my Le Cruset corkscrew of very similar design. (It was once branded as a Screwpull model, and may still be.) It has a very sturdy black plastic housing, which is not near.y so stylish as the Henckels. But, the plastic flexes a little, and squeezing it firmly will grip the cork and faciltate extracting the screw. Good luck. **Q: Can someone please tell me how long the worm is on this corkscrew?** A: Taken out of the corkscrew and measured by itself, the screw is 4 3/16” long. When it is in the corkscrew, 3 5/8” extends out from the inside top of the body of the corkscrew (that is, that’s how far the screw extends through the tube that goes over the neck of the bottle). This seems like a nice long screw that would pull any cork you would encounter. Sadly, that’s not actually the case. Because of the way the corkscrew is designed, with shoulders on the inside of the body of it, it can actually fully extract a cork slightly less than 2” long. And I can tell you from extensive experience, almost no wines have corks that are under 2” long! So, the corkscrew pulls the cork most, but not all, the way out. You have to pull it out the last 1/2” or so. That’s not usually very difficult, but it’s definitely not always easy. And, if you happen to be opening a particularly fine bottle of wine, one made with aging in mind, it will probably have a cork about 3” long, and you’ll have to pull out the last inch on your own. Which can be quite difficult, and can easily lead to a broken cork that is quite difficult to get out without a lot of bits of cork winding up in the wine. Not good! So the short answer to the question of how long the screw is: not long enough. The problem is actually with the effective length of the inside of the tube, but it is functionally the same thing. Too bad! It’s a very nice looking tool and made of sturdier material than the similarly-designed plastic manual Screwpull cork extractor (several of which have broken on me while I was using them). But at least the Screwpull will pull a cork of almost any length you will encounter. **Q: Is this a continuous turn corkscrew? Or do you need to pull to remove the cork?** A: It is a continuous-pull corkscrew. Once the screw reaches the end of its trajectory, further turns pull the cork up towards the casing of the corkscrew. I love the design and the functionality. Highly recommend as a gift to somebody who drinks wine. It is expensive but if you love stylish items, then it is for you. Some people complain it is not long enough, but I guess they use it on some fancy corks - on regular wine bottles it works like a charm.
