It opens both ways and the small bottom stop means you can choose which direction you want it to swing. Having now used both versions, I definitely prefer this one because of the more ergonomic latch. You do NOT need to scre it into a wall etc. It uses pressure instead and comes with all tools (spanner) to help make the perfect fit. This has been totally worth the money for my oeace of mind. By the way, the lock on the gate part looks like it's out of alignment, but you have to tighten up the gate when installing it and the gate section moves towards the lock.
