This is light-hearted and gently-produced folk music, backed by some excellent musicians, but laced with a razor-edged wit and keen observation. As a volcalist, Marika pushes herself into upper registers where perhaps only the likes of Julia Fordham would previously venture, but does so with such beguiling confidence that the songs flow effortlessly. "We Slept At Last" covers the spectrum from the poppy strains of the lightly-produced "Monday Afternoon" to the sombre depths of "Undone, Undress", but manages this with agility, bold confidence and complete success. Every single track on this 12-song album is exquisitely crafted, but perhaps the stand-out entry is "Animal Fear", which, despite carrying quite a bit more production input, never loses its sense of fun, it's poise, or the poignancy of it's lyrics. Awaiting an artist's debut album, having greatly enjoyed work they have previously produced, can be a trial, as in many cases the character they originally showed is stripped away to allow for, presumably, more 'commercial success', but thankfully Marika's quirkiness, abstract lyricism and ominous yet beautifully-crafted instrumentation remain in place, and, as stated, better than ever.
