The collection box is a great little add, no hoover required - just a strong hand to pull the box off to empty. No dust to speak of, all collected. A great job done, saving us a fortune on getting a tradesman in. We used 80 grit paper to start as several layers of wax and polish to get back to the wood, no trouble. Then it was 120 grit going up to 180 grit finishing with 240grit for a lovely smooth flawless finish. We are novices but will give DIY a go if within our knowledge, a great job done. Sanding is normally messy but this sucks it up really well and makes the whole task a lot less messy. Conveniently it stores all the dust in a removable cannister at the back which makes the task even easy. The capacity is acceptable to me, best for small to medium tasks, you don't have to keep emptying it that often. Overall, I'm a extremely impressed with this. Whatever the next power tool I buy will be, I am highly likely to get a Bosch one based on this sander alone. Therefore i would either use a heatgun for removing paint, or work the round spindles by hand in order to maintain there lathed shape. Whilst this is a great sander for most work, i just feel it may be a little to powerful for the work you describe. **Q: Need to sand down old stair case, has built up layers of varnish and gloss paint, will this do teh trick and do I need any particular paper?** A: dont forget old paints are very likely to have lead. Sanding these down will create fine lead dust which can cause serious medical problems, especially for children or those who are pregnant. It comes with 3 sanding sheets so unless your project is tiny I would buy some extras (I got an off brand pack of 60 on here for Β£10.99) - I used 5 sheets for my stairs (13 steps) and I also love that it comes in its own carry case. I bought this because I recently took the carpet off my loft stairs so I could paint and put down a runner. The stairs are MDF and were covered in old paint and glue but this sander got rid of almost all of it. The only draw back is how difficult it is to open the section that catches the dust. I took it outside, fought with it and ended up with most of the dust on me instead of in the bin. This is small but powerful so make sure you are prepared for the amount of dust it will generate! Goggles, face mask and hair coverings are a must.
